I said I would let you guys know when I got the M48 and what I thought of it.

Well, I am impressed and happy. If you don't remember, I ordered a M48 from CDNN in "good" condition which is the lowest grade they had availible. It said they had mis-matched parts so I wasn't expecting much. I just wanted a shooter to blast some of the super cheap 8mm surplus amm that is on the market right now. I got one of the Turk Mausers when they came out and it was O.K.

This M48 is REALLY nice. It does have a bolt that doesn't match the rest of the gun but CDNN says it checks head-space on all the rifles. Every other part on the rifle (except bolt) match, which surprised me a little. What surprised me a lot was the condition of the gun, it is in what I would call "excellent" for a C&R. The blueing is deep and near perfect with almost no signs of wear or use. The bore is bright and free of any pits or darkness. The Wood is even in really nice shape and has a warm rich grain with lots of attractive red tones to the grain. They didn't specify whether it was the M-48 or the M-48A in the ad but it is the M-48A which is the one I wanted because it has the milled trigger gaurd. No broken or missing parts, even has the cleaning rod.

Needless to say, I am very happy with this gun. I have serveral C&R guns since getting my C&R license a few months ago and the only C&R gun that I like better is my Yugo SKS from Aim. This is a light, handy rifle and it feels so much better than either my Turk Mauser or either of my Russian M-44s.

Hear are my C&R guns to date:
1938 Turk Mauser
Yugo SKS
Yugo M48A
CZ-52
Russian M44 (2)

I really like the Yugo SKS and the Yugo M48A, the Turk and the M-44s are fun but lack the grace of the Yugo M-48A, the SKS is just plain fun.

One correction to the above post, there is a little bit of roughness to the bore that I didn't notice until I cleaned it. It is not pitting but from the chamber out about 5", the bore is not as smooth or shinny as the rest of the bbl. It is not dark, more like a satin finish as compared to the mirror of the rest of the bore. I don't know if it will affect accuracy much since it is at the chamber side and not the muzzle.

It's a M48A for sure, it says it on the receiver. It may not be a milled trigger gaurd after all, I looked at it again and it is two pieces of metal fitted together, one is stamped and I don't know what the other is (cast).

hey Firestar - a word of caution

if you plan on shooting your M48 a lot I recommend getting a shoulder pad (or stocking up on the ibuprofen)

lightweight short rifle + 8mm mauser ammo + metal buttplate = an unpleasant experience, if you're going to be shooting more than a dozen rounds at a time.

Last time I took mine out I shot 40 rds and had a nasty bruise the next day.

Does it kick more than a M44? I have one of those and it about as much kick as I can shoot with any level of accuracy. I have a slip on rubber pad I will be useing anyway, I don't enjoy rifle kick but pistol recoil doesn't bother me at all, even the big bores. I shoot skeet also so I am used to having a sore shoulder.:D

My father has a .340 Weatherby Magnum in a lightweight Rem 700 with a nice Leopold scope and I can't a barn with it because i flinch so bad. It is the only gun that I don't even want to shoot even if someone is providing me with the free ammo.

The M44's got more kick to it

But that M48A is no slouch. When I put the scout mount on mine I went thru 85 rds in about 4 hours. I didn't notice while I was shooting, but the next day I thought my arm was going to fall off. I was kinda wishing it would.

My M48 with Turk 1943 ammo kicks a lot more than say my M1903 with M2 ball.

I feel the urge coming on to take them both out next week!
