Just had an attempted break in...

You KNOW you shouldn't have... good. I'll still be obnoxious about it, but it's because I care... if he'd stepped out of a shadow and hit you with a hammer, you'd have not only opened the door for him, but provided him with a gun to use on your wife (if she didn't shoot him first). Mkae him come to you, if he wants someone to get hurt. Then, feel justified in making sure it's HIM that bleeds.

If you didn't call the police, you should have... and still should. The house he tries tonight or tomorrow night might not have good locks, dogs, or a gun... law enforcement attention is still needed, because your would-be intruder is still out there... and rattling the door hard is not the MO of a 'cat burglar', but of a common thug.

Also, it's good to hear that your focus on locks and dogs as preventative measures made the gun ultimately unneeded.

Glad to know you're ok. Stay safe.
needs to be a stickie!

The problem with bouganvilla is it is both a climber and a warm climate (Zone 7 or better).
Try barberry bushes. They have 1/2"-1" needle-like thorns and you will think you've been in a fight with a porcupine! They can be pruned with gas/electric hedge clippers or left to grow and will get to be 4-6' tall and 3-4' wide.

That's low...

Wow, Sky, they took the old man's WWII memorabilia? Why? They can't hock that...

Hope they get them and hang 'em up by the 'nads.

For a long time.

Our local police are VERY interested in attempted break-ins, whether anything is taken or not. It helps them see what's going on in the community, and helps them decide where to put patrols.

A friend of mine is in the security business, and had a large dog trained to literally grab intruders by their manly parts. If the intruder tried to move, the dog would just tighten his grip a little bit. On at least one occasion, a terrified intruder found out how that worked. My friend and the police thought it was funny as heck. Come to think of it, so do I.

We have a small safe in our bedroom. Last thing at night, I open it. First thing in the morning, I close it again. That puts several handguns within easy reach at night.

I know of people that do this but that wouldn't have worked in this case. I work nights and we don't usually go to bed for the night until about 5-6 am and this happened about 11:30 at night.

Since we don't have small children in the house I feel comfortable leaving firearms unlocked in a drawer. I suppose the smarter thing would be for me to carry when I'm in the house but I don't have any place to strap my rig when I'm sitting in the bed in my underwear. LOL.

I live in what I consider a "good community", but when I am home my GI-45 in ON MY PERSON. Sounds like you did well in that scenario.

I was the victim of what is now popularly called "Home Invasion" way back in 1980. Let me say that being bound up on the floor and having to witness the gang-rape of your spouse is NOT a happy time

I know the feeling. The mowers found an parole ID card next to my side window. I think he was trying to pop the screen and could not. He then got spooked and dropped the ID card. Maybe my big Mal poked her head into the room, who knows. I have plastic spacers that locks the screen in place and the screens can only come out by removing the spacers. Now we pay closer attention to the neighborhood, especially in the early morning hours.

Do you live in the country? Did you call the cops? Does your wife know how to shoot and have the resolve to do so if she has to? I'm not gonna tell you what you SHOULD have done, just what I have already decided to do if/when the need arises.
1. Call the cops
2. Shout loudly "STAY OUT OR I'LL SHOOT" and make sure the dispatcher hears it, yell it into their ear.
3. Wait for the cops to arrive
4. If they break in, SHOOT.

My house has been broke into three times over the years, I wasn't home for any of them and the cops think it was just kids. Yet still I have the same mentality no matter who it is breaking into my home, I don't know why you're coming into my house without an invite and I don't care, I am assuming you mean harm to me or my family and are thus a threat.
The VERY FIRST thing I would do if I was sitting in bed and heard someone trying to break into my house would be to grab my car keys right on my nightstand and trigger the alarm on my truck in the driveway...

Kynoch: AWESOME IDEA!!! Way to think outside the box! I'll have to remember that and advise my wife of the same. Don't know if she'll do it cause we usually hang our keys in the kitchen, but certainly worth a try. Thanks for sharing!

Almost makes you want to rig a pepper spray can on your door that triggers from the inside.

Not my idea, but thanks...

I tell you what would be a great and simple product. A remote-controlled electrical switch with about a half dozen of those little pendants. Keep them in your pockets and on your nightstands.

I'm thinking of a siren in the attic pointed towards an outside air vent. Make it hideously loud. An intruder would be insane to stick around.

Take the 1-2 seconds to push the button before calling the cops or grabbing your gun. If you were really organized maybe one could attach the pendant to your gun...

ADT, Brinks, & other providers do just that. They have key fobs for their alarms that has a panic button. However, you are correct in that you can set a system like that up yourself, for a lot less and without the monthly charges. Although, it is worth it to have a monitored alarm system.

Did you call the cops and have the front door finger printed..?

NO...

Just my experience in TX and Okla. The cops will not finger print they are there to fill out the paperwork for your insurance and tax deductions. I have seen several thousands of dollars of stuff stolen from various places and never a finger print taken even when the owner requested it.

My experience is finger prints and movies go together but in real life on the street "not so much". Just what I have seen and experienced.

We kind of joke about it at the range but we would yell, Squirrel, at an attacker if we were surprised.

You can find out really quick if the perp is local, post a sign in the area...

' $( ) reward for information leading to arrest' .....

as is the normal verbiage you see on such signs. No honor amongst thieves its about the $ someone will TALK

just a thought, your neighbors might pitch in with the muddy prints and all.
