Back in 1969, just having returned back to the states from Vietnam, I purchased brand new, at the Marine Corps Infirmary, a 6.5" Single Six .22/.22WMR revolver. I managed to shoot it some (not a whole lot) but really enjoyed the opportunity.

Well as the time went on I joined the Police Department, (1971) and at the time we had to buy our own weapon, and leathers as was the custom at that time. So it necessitated my selling that little gem in order to purchase my duty weapon, along with another hand gun I had. Fortunately I sold it to my best buddy at the time.

Well here recently I got interested in the old Ruger 3 screws, So I purchased two at a LGS, one in .357, and the other in .30 Carbine (which I mentioned before), as I already had a Ruger in the .44Mag. and 2 3rd generation Colt .45's, the only one I was interested in was the afore mentioned Single Six. BTW I had purchased a New Model Super Single Six with the 5" barrel back around 1989, but for some reason it just wasn't the same as that old 3 screw.

After exhausting every lead I could, I finally gave up as they were way too expensive or else trashed or converted.

Upon giving it some thought I gave my old buddy a call and offered to trade him my New Model plus a $100.00 for the one I sold him back in 1971. Unfortunately he stated "no I'm saving it for my grand kids". So being as we are still best of buddies I agreed.

Well low and behold he called me back and said he had a change of heart and would work the deal I suggested under one condition if I ever decided to get rid of it he'd have first dibs. Needless to say I agreed.. Incidentally he only took it out once and shot about a box .22LR shells thru it. Unknown to me he still had the original box, along with the cardboard sheath, the Magnum Cylinder, and the paper work that it came with. Mine only had the original paperwork and aftermarket plastic case, along with the Magnum Cylinder.

Below are the photos: .

That's amazing! It isn't often you have that accommodating of a friend who would do something like that for you (it's only been 46 years since you sold it to him), and then to have a chance to travel back in time to be reunited with your still pristine Single Six (I mean it's just like he's been holding on to it all these years just to trade it back to you)!

Very cool story! Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations, you've got to be feeling pretty good getting it back after all these years, and well taken care of too.

Believe me I was ecstatic at seeing that old gun after all these years. We've both been thru quite a lot over the years, and did a lot of hunting together during that time. In fact his kids still refer to me as there "uncle", in fact I wasn't even sure if he still even had the firearm until I inquired. When making the deal complete with the original box etc. I was absolutely thrilled to no end. I reckon that is what buddies are good for, preserving memories.

Sorry you're right Creature, it was a USMC Exchange not an infirmary, just got my pronouns mixed up. I wonder if you can still buy firearms at Military Exchanges today? Does anybody know one way or the other.

I cannot imagine how it must have taken you back in time when you saw your Ruger and box looking as though it not aged a bit in all those years!

Thank you for a wonderful story , and especially for your service.

Your more than welcome Waveski, We both take very good care of our firearms, but I was amazed just the same to get it back in such great condition, and in the box none the less, with the paperwork.

image.jpg image.jpg Great story I'm glad you have it back.
I have one like yours bought in 1970 by my uncle who was in the Navy off Iwo Jima. Then given to my father who gave it to me.They both have passed on by it reminds me of them both.
Click Click Click, don't you love that sound.

Great looking three screw, I did notice yours is the Super Single Six with the adjustable rear sight, I've got a very similar holster for mine, which I bought after I purchased the one for the trade, umpteen years ago.
