Alright I know this discussion is as old as the hills but I am kind of faced with actually making this decision. If I had to chose one gun what would it be?

Here is my situation. There is a very strong possibility that I may be relocating to California on a new work assignment that could last 3 years or more. I own several handguns, rifles and shotguns. I am hesitant to pack up all of my tools and bring them with me to California but I have a very strong desire to bring at least one firearm for personal protection at my homestead. The firearms that don't come with me I will leave with trusted family members here in Michigan and I don't believe that I can do that with the handguns so I would probably have to sell those.

If you had to make the choice what would you do? Handguns are Ruger GP100 4" 357mag, Ruger SP101 2.25" 357 mag, or SA XD40, rifles are Marlin 336 30-30 or Enfield Jungle carbine, shotguns are 11-87 12GA and 870 12GA.

I currently have a CCW here in Michigan and would like to get one in California if possible. I am just now reviewing the gun laws there and I am not completely knowledgeable about them. So if any California citizens that have any advice please sound off. Location in California would be near Thousand Oaks.

Maybe I am making a deal about this but it is weighing on my mind. My understanding is that California has a semi-auto ban so I did not even list my semi's above.

What would you do? Thanks

If the only use is personal protection at "the homestead" it is a no brainer - pump action shotgun.

Thousand Oaks in Ventura County is not an impossible plavce to get a CCW but it's very difficult to get one in Southern California. I understand Ventura County will require residence for at least six months before even considering an application then it can take betweeen 5 months to a year to get one if they issue one at all. Since CA is not a Shall issue state start working on your, "good cause" statement right away.

As far as guns you don't have to limit yourself. just make sure to check out the DOJ approved list and buy a gun(s) out of state that are not approved in CA. You can bring them with you or buy them private party but you can't buy them new through a ffl. I've been looking for a Kimber Pro Raptor II with internal extractor to round out my Raptor Collection.

If you have AR's or AK's you want to Kaliforniaze them. Check out Calguns.net. NO bushmasters or Colts. PM me if you want more detailed info. I live 30 min away from Thousand Oaks and pass through there regularly.

CA Doesn't have a semi-auto ban. The CA DOJ Firearms division has all of the info you need for your semiautos.

If you feel you only want to bring 1 gun, then I vote for the 870. May I ask why you want to leave everything else back in Michigan? Long guns don't have to be registered in CA and handguns aren't too much to register. CA residents can own as many guns as they want.

Thanks for info Glockman19, I need to do more homework with regard to the CCW. Was not aware of the 6 month wait.

Aaryq: I was thinking only 1 gun to keep things simple. Nearly certain I will be returning to MI after assignment is over. I may be overthinking (worrying) about what I thought was overly strict gun laws in CA. I figured a lever gun or pump shotgun would be more socially acceptable (PC). I guess I am victim of reading to many stories about draconian Californian gun laws / bans.

Any pitfalls to avoid if I want to register all the handguns?
