Out to change cards in the deercams this afternoon and after the first one I thought I would come up from the creekbottom and look at a scrape in the corner of a pasture on top of the bluff. As soon as I cleared the top, but still in the woods I could see deer running in the sunlight out in the pasture. I first thought I might have spooked them but it turned out to be five bucks and one doe. The biggest one was tending the doe, the rest were hanging around. They ran all over the pasture and woodline, including past me for about 15 minutes before they followed the doe into the bottom.
I recognized all the bucks except possibly the biggest. I had a Standard Products M1 Carbine along for coyote, pigs or dogs but of course, I'm a compliant and obediant servant of our government and wouldn't even CONSIDER shooting a deer 12 hours before the season. Sure was nice to see them just....prancing....around...inside my zero...in the bright sunlight.
Big Six, who looks bigger in person than on cam looked me over pretty carefully but I wouldn't move and had the wind. He finally ambled off.
My dad would have really loved this. Big shootable bucks right behind the lakehouse here in your Smith County, Texas. If they are going to act this dumb, even briefly, I hope they stay off the road and on my side of the creek.
I'm not planning on taking a buck at the lake, just going to shoot does at Clarksville, but last year they tempted me a little too much one afternoon. They better not pull that again.
