Just saw Sin City

The original stories didnt really tie together either. The only thing they really have in common is that they all take place in the same location. I'm GLAD that the director didnt force them together to "mainstream" the film.

I just got back from seeing the movie. It was awesome. The story kinda stalled at some points but the gratuitous close ups of the milspec 1911 saying Springfield Armory were great! I will definately have to rent it when it comes out to watch it more closely!

"...couldn't help think it was an ad for Springfield."

Is this a bad thing?

Even if it is...Gosh, then mebbe Ruger, S&W, Taurus etc., will feel the need to respond in kind. Movies and some specialist print magazines are the only venue outside the internet that gun manufacturers can do and positive advertising anymore, and I think that Springfield Armory got good placement of it's product. Afterall, only the "heroes" use--identifiably, at least--SA 1911's. The bad guys use more-or-less annonymous sub guns, and even "sweet little Nancy's" SHTF revolver (a ruger blackhawk?) goes unremarked, but not Mikey Roark's characters' named handgun, "Gladys".

I'm getting the sense that this is a movie directed at a very minute audience -- those who are familiar with and like the graphic novels of the same name.

Anyone else, it's starting to seem, might be left out almost entirely, or at least, left watching a movie that makes no sense to them, does not appeal to them, and does not even have the typical elements of the normal movies they go to see.

Does that seem like a very bright marketing strategy?

I may or may not see it. A friend loaned me one of the graphic novels. Now that I have been informed that there are three, I don't even know which one he gave me, but I hope it's number one.

Ben, why don't you just buy a milspec 1911 saying Springfield Armory and be done with it? :p LOL!

We know you wanna!

There is enough room for all kinds of movies. Making movies based on marketing strategy is how we wind up with movies like "Bad Boys 2" and "Speed 2". Traditional Hollywood movies have been heading downhill for a long time (and I hadnt thought that they could get any worse 5 years ago) it's nice to see someone doing something different. Even if you don't like it, perhaps it will encourage others to try some new things that you WILL like.

8.7/10 on imbd.com so I have to see it. It's rare for me not to like a movie on imbd that is rated over 8.

I wanted to see it yesterday, but my better half was sick. I'm hoping to see it today.

This was one of the best films I've seen in ages, but agree that if you didn't like "Pulp Fiction" you should stick with "The Incredibles" or wait for the next "Sponge Bob Square Pants" film to come out. I also agree that Michael Madsen's performance was pretty dismal. Quentin Tarantino is credited as "Special Guest Director." Too bad he couldn't have coaxed a better performance out of the man. One nice touch is that none of the guns held more rounds than it should have. If the character was shooting a 1911, it had 8 or so rounds. The Blackhawk held six, like Sam Colt intended.

Notice a pattern between the guns shown in the film and the cars? Everything was old school. The cars were generally 1940s or 1950s American iron--Cadillacs, 57 Chevy Bel Aire, 40s sedans. Even the one import I remember--the Ferarri--was over a decade old. Likewise the guns were generally American iron with old-school designs, mostly single-action autoloaders and one notable revolver. The foreign guns that did show up also used dated technology, like the Uzi.

Rodrigez does seem to know his guns. After the film I watched "Once Upon a Time in Mexico," and that was also a gun-nuts wet dream.

Saw it yesterday and loved it! The best firearms choices I have seen in a movie in a long time. I will definitley buy it on dvd! (Note: The wife didn't like it very much. Something about: Violence, Blood, Hookers, etc. Might not be the best date movie. Definitily not for kids either. Just a heads up.)

Didn't know anything about the books. Hell didn't even know their were books. Saw the movie yesterday and loved it. If you walked out of this movie better stay with Bambi and Snow White their easy to understand. :neener: Great movie lots of violence ,lots of boobs and lots of 45's Leave your wife at home and enjoy a night out with the boys. This is Mike Hammer with balls.

Sin City was filmed here in Austin,TX at the old Robert Mueller Airport. My Gunsmith is a also a FX guy who worked on Sin City.

How the heck did I miss that? Now I like it even better. :)

I agree (although I liked Bad Boys 2  ). It seems like there are too many movies that are filmed with a marketing strategy in mind, trying to get as many people to go see the movie as possible. I can't blame movie companies for doing this, as one of the main goals of any business is to make as much money as possible. But the end product often seems to be a mediocre movie that gets butts in the seats and isn't particularly bad but doesn't really make anybody say "wow that was a great movie." A lot of peoples' favorite movies are ones that a lot of people didn't like.
That being said, I had never heard of the comics before I saw the previews for this movie, I didn't like Kill Bill (although Kill Bill 2 wasn't bad), and I liked Sin City a lot (same goes for my girlfriend). I'd take a well executed, so-so plot over a poorly executed great plot. The former is usually pretty entertaining and the latter is always disappointing for me.

My wife and I went to see it yesterday, I loved it. She was not quite as enthusiastic, but didn't seem surprised when I said that I was going to buy it when it came out on DVD. There were a few times I had to remind myself that I was watching a live action movie and not a animated feature, but this is a good thing to me.
I got lost a little at first because I didn't know that it was setup like Pulp Ficiton, but once I figured that out I got really into it. I liked the second story the best (Marv and Goldie), and had a hard time getting into the one with Clive Owen. I do kinda wish they had done more with the Josh Hartnett character/storyline. The occasional splashes of color (mostly blood) really caught my eye. So did Marv's probation officer....lol

Great flick if you like Pulp Fiction and similar movies.

I saw it last night. I've never seen the graphic novels, but I loved the film.

It was dark, violent, sexual, and often funny. Best film experience I've had in a while.

I want to see it for two reasons. One is all the cool guns and two is all the hot chicks!!!

Saw it, loved it.

I thought the chronological symmetry was pretty cool. It started with the Harnett story and ended with the Harnett story. The next set of brackets in was the the Willis story, then the Rourke story, and the Clive Owen story was told straight through in the middle.

I loved Elijah Woods glasses.

Who was the actress that played the blue-eyed hooker?

Saw it earlier today. Absolutely amazing. Every once in a while, a movie comes out that turns the entire movie-making formula on it's head. This movie chewed up that formula and spit out something entirely new and exciting. Incredible. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller hit this one out of the park.

And I just had to grin whenever a Springfield 1911 came up on the screen. :D

Sin City: I just got back from seeing this flick. On one hand, it could very well be the most violent movie I've ever seen. On the other, it is one of the most incredible movies I've ever seen. The direction was great. Thanks to Pulp Fiction style disjointed editings with the help of QT, it never got boring and the pace never slowed down but to catch its breath. Lots of skin, but more of an artistic way and not pornographic. The lighting and the color effects were brilliant. The cast was fantastic. The hole thing was awesome but you have to have the stomach for it, kinda like a week in Vegas with only a 20 in your pocket. I'm buying the DVD. The Special Edition on this one will be epic. The girls in the movie. Stunning. Every one of them. Alba's dancing. Dayum. Springfields were in good effect here. Lots of Government Models, and one Micro Compact. Uzis and other assorted nasty SMGs were there... but the surprise star of the handguns came from a couple Ruger Blackhawk revolvers. They were either on Alba's perfectly sculpted hips or in Bruce's paws shooting. Some cool cars too. You think you have the era pegged in where this film is trying to come from and they roll out a car that turns your idea on the edge. This flick is like a lot of Private Eye Noir films and some Spaghetti Westerns all rolled up into one. I'm not so sure if there is any moral or morality to this flick... but if there is any message to it, it is a pretty blunt statement about how Frank Miller feels about guys who hurt women and kids, and corrupt politicians... and that the good guys should do everything they can to crush them. This I can agree with. If you go see it, don't take a date... don't take any kids. This flick is for the grownups who eat at the big table. Robert Rodriguez did a masterful job shooting, directing and cutting this one. In the opening credits he has his name under “Shot and Cut Byâ€. Appropriate. Rodriguez remains locked into my top 3 favorite directors. I don't think anyone but Micheal Mann could have done this movie anywhere nearly as well. Mann and Rodriquez are pretty much tied for first place with Kurt Wimmer a very very close 3rd place. My only question is why didn't they put some makeup on Mickey Rourke?
