So, I've had this 870 that I've had for quite a while. It had a 28" barrel and only held 4 rounds in the magazine tube. Good for hunting but not much else. So, I had some money from Christmas and my birthday so I got a Reminton 20" IC barrel with rifle sights and a Choate 3 rnd mag ext. I've put about 60 rounds of 00, 40 rounds of 1oz slugs, and 200 rounds of light #8 shot through it in this configuration. Loads of fun. I like this gun MUCH better and it has just a completely different personality.

(not so great pic but it does have my 1911 in it)

In the rear sight pic you can see some kinda gunk that was in the barrel in shipping. It has been very difficult to take off.

(please excuse the mess on the porch. Its cold and I don't want to clean it till spring.) :D

Just got one too. Have some pics posted in another thread, but they didn't come out too good. I enhanced and resized a couple, and they look better now.

Gotta love the 870. Both these guns are new, neither more than a couple months old. I guess when they have seen some field time, they will show wear. Hopefully, they will last. I don't want to have to buy any more for awhile. Rather get ammo instead.

Fun as always.

I finally got around to taking a pic of my home defense system.

Remington 870 Express Magnum w/Knoxx Spec Ops stock and Springfield Armory XD45 ACP 4"

I wish I could install a mag extension on it, but I'd have to drill out the dimples in the mag tube first. I'm afraid I'll mess it up if I attempt to do it.

Mine came with an extension. No dimples. You could probably get a whole new tube for it without them, if you wanted.

How is the Knoxx on the 870? Personally, I am kind of hincky about springs and stuff. I know they also have a recoil stock, that is supposed to cut recoil by half. But I am really not sure about either, since I have never shot with one before. Are there openings that can pinch your hand or wedge your trigger finger? I heard someone say that they get slapped by the stock if they use the GR sights. Any truth to that? Just curious.

For a more economical recoil reduction solution (without altering your stock) try the Remington R3 (limbsaver) pad.

When I used the factory stock, I would go home with a nice bruise on my right shoulder, but after installing the Knoxx Spec Ops stock on it, it has been nothing but fun fun fun. I would recommend it to anyone with a 12 gauge 870, who bruises easily from recoil. It does exactly what it was designed to do.

I used a 1/4" metal drill bit. Basically I drilled a hole where the dimples where. Then cleaned it up a bit with a dremmel tool. Very simple.

Clipse,

Where did you buy that mag tube extension and clamp from? How much was it? And is that a rifled or smooth barrel?

Here are my 2 870s, on the green one I had to use a neighbors dremel to take out the dimples in order for it to take the mag extension. I got the extension off the internet for about 20$ I think.

What year is that 870? I had one that I bought in 1981, and it had the parkerized (Ivorized?) finish on it, but it was gray, not black. And I seem to remember the stocks were darker than those are. Just curious. Mine was an 870 express with a 4 rd mag, and 18 inch barrel, AFAIR.

I was in Texas in 1986. Ended up selling it to a pawn shop for food money, sometime during the week of the shuttle crash. Major bummer to have to do it, but I was an Aircraft Specialist, and when the shuttle went down, NASA instituted a hiring freeze, and my perspective job fell through. Houston was already having their share of difficulties that winter. By April, 150,000 homes were foreclosed on. By 1989, both Eastern and PanAm shut down completely, and over 80,000 A&P mechanics were left without work. Since I was an Electronics specialist, I didn't have a prayer when it came to finding a job.

Eventually cross trained into computers and internet. Managed to get a job in that for almost a year before the Dot.Com fiasco. That was back in 2001. I got a supposed to be temp job working security while trying to find work in computers again. The war started about 6 months after that, and I got my armed ticket, and went to work with the company under contract to the city, guarding a Marina. Got a lot of firearms training and experience from that. Ended up working different security gigs for about 5 years. Did some patrol work, and worked Armored carriers. Got tired of it, surrendured my tickets, and became a civilian type again. Interesting experience though.

Still got VA comp coming in. I'd like to sell my property here, and move out into the country. Cheaper to live there by far on a fixed income. And I have another 870, so at least I'll have an HD weapon, for out in the sticks somewhere. Have to wait and see if the market in South Florida wakes up again. Otherwise, I'll have to get another job soon.

I finally did it, I successfully installed a TacStar 2 round mag extension. I went from 4+1 rounds to 6+1 rounds:evil:

Thanks everyone for the helpful tips on installing it.

I had a tac-star on my 870. Watch out for it coming unscrewed while you're shooting. Mine never fell off but it got real loose.

clipse, nice looking gun you got there. Ive decided on the same barrel, but with remchoke for HD/deer/turkey. You like the sights ok? Pick up your target quick?

By the way, I took it to the range yesterday. Got some silouettes, the white ones that count from 5 down. Ran the target out to about 7 yds. Loaded up the shottie with 5 rds. Nervous, since I hadn't fired it before. Pulled the trigger. Wouldn't budge.

Oops, safety. Ok, ready. Pulled the trigger. Click. Dummy. Gotta put a round in the chamber. Now, I am really feeling stupid, as well as apprehensive. I shuck a round into the chamber. Jam the weapon into my shoulder. Pull the trigger.

Blam! Look at the target. You know, right in the center of it, where the 5 used to be, is one jagged hole. :D One b ig jagged hole. Like, fist sized.

Wow. I like this, Recoil isn't too bad. Lemme do that again. Blam! Cool. Ran through 4 boces of ammo, about 20 rds. Some frangible stuff for the range, Not reduced recoil, but it was lighter than the buck. Patters with the 18 inch barrel stayed on paper out to about 15 yards. I think I'd need slugs for further. But between 7 to 10 yds, the results were nothing short of amazing. I am guessing that if I ran some 3 inch rounds through it, that the pattern might tighten up somewhat. But there is no choke at all in that barrel length, and it spreads out pretty quick. Overall, fun to shoot. Cleaned it really good when I got home, and got some special lube for it, at about 10 bucks a tube.
Smooth as silk now. I love it. Can't wait to shoot again. And no bruising. Yet.

Nice, I like that you left the wood furniture on it. I have one like it too, only mine has an "18 barrel. I'm going with the Wilson 3 shot extension & some sling swivels. Your 870 looks classic mean!:D
