i will try to clean up the stock of this newly acquired mauser this weekend. i looked at disassembly instructions and then the rifle. the front band appears to have a rounded projection. do i depress this with an instrument and then just slide it off? is there a method?

The round projection in the band is the end of the band spring. You can press it in with a nylon punch, but its better to compress the spring behind the band. If the band isn't too tight you can sometimes comptress the spring with your fingers, more likely you'll need a clamp to compress it- I use wooden splints broken from wooden shims on the spring and on the other side of the rifle stock with a C-clamp to compress the spring. Once you have it compressed, you might have to drive the front band off the stock with a wooden dowel and a hammer.

thank you both for the good information. i look forward to this little project and the cleaning of this old gunstock.
