Quick question, for all of you Smith K-frame lovers out there...

I just acquired a model 15 that has some pretty good holster wear but seems to lock up pretty well. Grips are old Magna style and are dry and worn - esp. the right panel - probably from being slapped around while being carried.

I was playing (so to speak) with the 15 this evening. The grips aren't very filling to say the least and my hand keeps riding up on the backstrap. I suspect the Magna style - thicker at the bottom and narrow at the top - is the culprit.

I'm sure Tyler T-grips would help or the larger Smith Target-style grips. I've not used T-grips before. My Ruger has larger grips - similar to the Smith Target style.

Those of you who have Model 15s or Model 10s (or other K-frames), which do you prefer? Neither is a major investment - I saw some Tgrips for $25 or so, and some wood non-Smith brand target grips for $25 or so - but I need some information on which to try first.

Purpose of gun is range use - plinker & target. Maybe, someday, it could be a CCW after I find a holster for it. Grips first, though.

Which to try: T-grip or Target stocks?

Thanks,
Q

get the target stocks. I've seen a bunch on ebay for pretty resonable prices and you will have the S&S medalion as well. I never like the magna grips either. I have similar styles on two K-22's and they are too small for my own tiny little paws. I had the same problem with a model 48 I recently picked up. I put a set of factory target grips on it and am very satisfied.

magna grips with a t grip is for me(with large hands) my prefered set up on most all S&W's

I like the target stocks. They give width as well as being longer front to back. I have them on my 4" 10-6 HB and my 6" 14-3.

How long and heavy is the barrel?

I got an old Model 10 with the standard barrel (like the Victory above, but polished blue). It had big, hand-filling Pachmayrs on it. I replaced them with original-style S&W service grips, and I really like it that way. So does my wife, who gained a new appreciation for a classic gun when she first tried it. She's decided she loves the Model 10.:)

OTOH I have a 4" 686 (square butt L-frame, same grip frame as an old K) that now wears Ahrends Tactical no-groove grips, and I really like it that way. They are really hand-filling. It's a good deal heavier, especially the barrel end, than the Model 10.

Personally, I find that there's a balance to be struck between the weight, especially the muzzle weight, of the gun, and the size of the grips. The Pachmayrs felt too big on the Model 10; it felt like there was no weight at all forward of my trigger finger. The service grips may not fill the hand, but the gun feels very well-balanced with them.

I also have no trouble using the stock grips on a Model 60 snubbie or a 642. They feel balanced, also. They're relatively skinny, but the guns are light.

Another grip to consider is the Ahrends Retro Target, which are slimmer than the S&W Target grips were. IMO they would be a better balance for most K-frames.

Bought this 67 used and the original magna grips where beat up so bad they looked like they'd been drug behind the squad car. I swap grips around on mine from time to time between my different K frames. I'm back to the plain rubber Pachmeyer Presentation grips as they seem to fit the best for shooting games and everyday use.

and if the t-grip is not your style, Houge bantams(rd only) feel the same, also many others, but the trip for some reason for me works the best for either rd or sq butt

Since you are going to shoot at the range a lot and the current grips that are on the revolver are badly worn you will probably be better off buying some target grips. I like wood much better than rubber but I put a set of Pachmayr Gripper Grips on my M686 because I shoot it mostly at the range. There are several companies who make very good wooden grips that will be as comfortable or even more comfortable than rubber grips but the price is high for those quality grips. (Badger, Spegel and Altamont are among them)
