Dad brought his K22 shooting this weekend, only to discover it didn't work. Couldn't cock the hammer, single or double action. After a bit of investigation, it seems that the bolt in the bottom of the cylinder window which locks the cylinder in place is out of time. It drops down when you start to cock the hammer, but pops back up too soon which prevents the cylinder from turning. Any ideas on what needs fixed? I'm gonna call the local smith tomorrow and see what he says. He's a good guy and I don't think he would take a job over his head, but... Is this one that's better off sent back to S&W for repair?

My 1st suggestion is always a thorough cleaning. It could be a timing problem with the cylinder stop, but it only drops for a fraction of a second to unlock the cylinder and if you turning the action slowly while watching this part it may just look like it's out of time when it's not. A smith can tell you for sure.

I'll not only second that, but add that's ususally the best advice for any problem with a revolver. Between dirt and gummy old oil, there's a lot of potential trouble in the guts of many, many revolvers. Fortunately, it's easily remedied.
