Just took my new revolver to the range today. Single action had no problems. Had a double action problem intermittently. The cylinder advanced every time, but the hammer would just move about 1/8 of an inch. Cock the hammer SA, and it would fire. This is the second new Smith going back for it's initial QA since last September. Do you guys know what is wrong with this revolver?

Does it do it with no cartridges in the chambers?

You may just have unburned powder under the extractor star.
The decreases headspace, and causes case rims to rub hard on the recoil shield.

Which the DA leverage is unable to overcome.

Clean under the ejector throughly with an old toothbrush before you send it back!

I'm just going to guess that the double action sear is sticking. If you cock the hammer back you can see it by looking down the face of the hammer, you should be able to depress the bottom end of it with a pick of some sort and and have it spring back out. If it doesn't move smoothly there may be a burr or some grit in it. You say the hammer moves only 1/8 of an inch, this would be forward if indeed the problem. The trigger block backs the hammer up as you release the trigger to allow the hammer block to rise into place between the hammer and frame. I recommend just dropping some oil on it and giving it some exercise to see if it will loosen up.
