I found a source of 7.5swiss near my location, and I'm looking for my first deer rifle for the upcoming season, and I've just about settled my sights on either a 1911 (the swiss rifle, not the handgun!:)) or a K31, depending upon local availability. The caliber/rifle combo seems ideally suited to my hunting style. In the past, I've carried either a mini-14 or an ar-15, both .223, and both using using only iron sights. I hunt in a wooded area primarily, adjacent to a rye grass field. The longest shot I can see taking in the woods is like 50 - 60 yards, while the longest shot over the field would be 200 yards (212 yards on the field's longest side).

My budget is limited, $175-$200 tops, so my options are limited too. Just about the only other option I can think of would be a Mosin-Nagant or an SKS, neither of which offer the accuracy of the Swiss rifles. What other options do I have?

Oh, and just to set it straight, I plan to keep this rifle, lend to young hunters (in my company), and eventually pass it down to my children. I will not desecrate my rifle in any way - no sporterizing, no chopping the bbl, not even mounting a modern scope (perhaps a period scope eventually, but that's not in the near future). I want a rifle I can be proud of. It doesn't have to be fancy, it just has practical.

One of the features of the K31 I admire is the name tags that are often foudn under the buttplate. If I end up with one, I will do my best to track down the rifle's original owner, or failing that, his offspring.

So, after my rambling post, anyone have suggestions? :)

For your purposes, the K31 will be better than the 1911. It's stronger (front locking lugs, shorter), cheaper, and spare parts are more readily available. For your budget, you could buy two, which is a very good deal when you consider that spare magazines alone cost almost as much as another rifle.

I think the K31 is a great rifle for wooded areas and iron sight shots. It's very accurate.

I just ordered a scope and rings to mount on my clamp-on mount, so I can do long distance shots. None of those mods are permanent either which is nice.

Also....although it takes some getting use to the trigger I think it has one of the easiest pulls I've ever found in a firearm.

For those who have never shot the K-31 the trigger is not like military triggers or the triggers most of us are use to on our rifles.

In short, with the K-31 you squeeze the trigger and there is no hesitation (like there is in our rifles) letting you know you are close to kaboom.

The K-31 has one continuous squeeze all the way to the firing point and almost always is a total surprise to me when it does go off.

I'll buck the trend here a bit (fwiw I also have/love multiple K31s) & suggest the 1911. The main reason is that it is so much rarer than the 31 & the opportunity to pick one up may not come along again any time soon.

Either way though I doubt that you'll regret it. I'm amazed that these rifles don't cost many times what they are selling for, they are absolutely superb rifles.

Excellent, I'll check back in when I get home - I'm going out to start the search right now! K31 it it, unless I find a 1911 instead, then I'll have some serious thinking to do!

The K-31 has a reputation of extreme accuracy in a military rifle. I'd go with that one. Plus, if you want to, you can mount a scout scope on it with NO gunsmithing. Check out this sight for info:
K-31 Scout Mount

The K31 is gonna have to wait, providence called instead. I was on the way to my 4th gun store that didn't have any k31's in stock while listening to Dial-a-trade, when a guy called in offering a Mosin-Nagant M44 for $35. I bounced on it, to say the least. Pics to follow!

O, don't worry, I'll be getting my K31 - along with my C&R - next month. I'm hooked!

photos!

Here are some VERY quick snaps, haven't cleaned it or anything. After a quick function check and bore cleaning, i'm off to the range before work!

That's a mighty fine rifle for $35.

As for your original question, I'd have to say the K31. It's has the same OAL, but a longer barrel than, the 1911 Carbine. As I also have a full size 1911, I'd say it'd be too long to be wieldy when hunting.

For hunting, I'd suggest Darrell's scout mount, for which there are K31 and M44 versions. Add an inexpensive scope, such as the NC Star 2.5x, and you'll have yourself a nice, handy deer rifle.

True, but the GP11 ammo is close to match-grade. So is it the rifle, the ammo, or both?

I've got to believe both. I had a Chinese SKS that would shoot "minute-of-barn-door" with Chinese ammo at 100 yards, but the groups shrunk to about 3 inches when using good stuff. Nonetheless, the K-31 is an example of the precision of Swiss Machine work. It would probably give decent accuracy with any good ammo.

My gawd! My gawd!

You chose a Mosin Nagant over a K-31?

What's the matta widj ya man? You lost it?

Mosin Nagants will be around fifty years from now and the supply of K-31 is reportedly already drying up. Dang.

Don't be comin' around later with :banghead: because you snoozed.

And, btw, the M/N is not even close to being on the same quality level as the K-31.

OK....I'm done, LOL.

edited to say that, after reading this post, it sounds quite harsh when, in fact, I was 'saying' what I was in great jest and humor.

Sorry if I sounded a little arrogant.

Enjoy that Mosin. But, I would still suggest getting a K-31 whenever you can.

Yeah, i know not the same quality by FAR, but it was $35! The $75 I saved isn't getting blown, i'm spending $25 on ammo, and puttin $50 back for my K31. They may not be there in a few years, but they'll be there next month.

Now - range report! With the price of gas, the only 100yd rifle range around was an indoor one, and they didn't allow steel-core ammo, so my surplus stuff didn't get run through. Luckily, I bought 3 boxes of Silver Bear softpoints for hunting, so I ran through two of them. I've heard the M-N wasn't so great in the accuracy department, but my sample seems to be fairly decent. I ran a boresnake down the bore, gave her a light coat of CLP, and off I went. My first shot was at 50 yards, and was about 2" high. I pushed the target out to 100 yards, and my next 4 shots went in a 2.25" group about 1" under the bullseye. The next few groups were slightly larger, but I maintained 3" 5-shot groups throughout my short session, with only 3 flyers out of 40 rounds fired.

Maybe I got a good one, maybe I got lucky, or maybe I'm just an outstanding shot. I find the last possibilty highly unlikely, so I'm thinking I jsut got lucky and picked a good one. The bore is shiny, with few pits, and the action is smooth. The trigger is heavy and leaves much to be desired, but I can't really complain. Overall, I think I got a pretty good deal, and its not like I'm missing out, since I'll be getting my K31 in the near future.

I'm also considering getting my C&R, since I like my new M44 so much, and I KNOW I'll love the Schmidt.

I'm off to work, so I'll see you guys when I get home!

Good purchase, the Russian guns are way underrated. Not in the same class as the K31 but very capable firearms and a heck of a deal for $35! Now get that C&R license send out copies and get you a second job to support your new crack(sorry meant gun, but might as well be crack) habit that goes along with the C&R. Now it's a M44, then it will be a K31, You'll love it and have to get a 2nd K31, and then it's mausers. Turks, Germans, Czech, Swedes(Oh Baby! :D ),etc. Well then an SKS, make it two SKS's, well now I gotta get a Garand. OOOHH, they got C&R pistols too! Gotta get one CZ52, maybe a Tokarev. Wait, now I need an Enfield. See where this is going? Be careful there young Jedi, that $30 C&R license may be the end of you :D .

Back from work. I spent the last eight hours daydreaming about my new rifle and waiting for her name to come to me. It hasn't yet - it will! :)

I already have a CZ-52, I'm looking at either a Nagant revolver or a Nambu in time. I'll probably get the whole WW2 russian infantry setup eventually, then move on to other nations. In time, right now I'm sitting in my living room fondling my m44 :)
