Ok, I've had my eye on the K31's now for awhile. After reading some threads of new purchases, I think it's time I got one. I am looking for a walnut stocked model and I'd really like to get one with a troop ID tag. I believe all the below K31s on the 3 sites have all been imported by Samco.

I'm trying to determine where I should order from and what condition as well.

Samco has 3 condition levels, very good for $150, special select for $160 and excellent condition for $180. (this is including the $20 surcharge for walnut stocks) http://www.samcoglobal.com/rifles.html

AIM surplus has 1 level, for $160, which is $40 more than their beech version. They advertise these as "good to very good condition" They also have a hand pick for $10. http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Swiss_1931_Carbine_Schmidt_Rubin_K31_Rifle_Select.html

Classic Arms has a walnut stocked all matching # with troop ID tag for $160. The condition claimed is "very, very, good". http://www.classicarms.us/index.html

I emailed Samco in November about their special select walnut K31 (they were out of the excellent at the time), and they told me it would be $140 for the special select walnut, and for $20 more, I could guarantee an ID tag. granted their prices have gone up since then, but I'd imagine if I'd WANT a tag, an excellent cond. K31 at samco would be $200.

The best deal seems to be classicarms.us @ $159.95 for walnut w/ troop ID tag. You can't pick what "condition" it will come in though. Does this sound like my best bet?

Well, I cant comment on walnut, but my beech K31 handpick from AIM is great. The steel looks new and the stock looks great after a mild refinish.

Samco has nice k31's but 2-4 weeks shipping. The k31 is an excellent rifle well worth over 150.00 bucks. Get it if you can, you wont regret it.

I bought my K-31 about a year ago and love it. It was in great shape, except for the stock within about 2" of the buttplate (which is the area nearly all K-31's have lots of wear), it is a walnut stock, and did have the ID tag under the buttplate.I got it from Southern Ohio Guns.Last I saw, they were going for like $170 give or take a little. They do have the option of handpicked for $10, but I've never used it, so I cant say if its worth it or not.Thier customer service is GREAT in my experiance, but I've never tried to exchange/return a gun from them myself, but have heard from several people who did and had no problems and were satisfied. They usually ship withing 48 hours of ordering (except if you order on the weekend), and it usually arrives in about 5 days.I have bought about 10 milsurps from them and HIGHLY recommend them.If their currently sold K-31's are like mine, (which I cant say for sure) I would DEFINITELY reccomend them.they don't seem to have them on their website at the moment (http://www.southernohiogun.com/) but the have them in the most recent flyer I got from them last month.

Classic Arms

I got a k31 from Classic with my C&R last week. Ordered it Tuesday,--it arrived Thursday.

Walnut, all matching, w/tag, very good exterior- bright and clean bore. $160.00

Shipping was about $13.00 to Tennessee.

This is my 7th gun from Classic. Always fast shipping and excellent service.

I ordered a "special select" (whatver that means) from Samco just before Xmas, for $119.00 with beech stock. The stock has the usual dings of honest Swiss use, and the barrel bands have the paint (?) flaking off of them. Other than that the rifle is in excellent condition. The bluing on the edges of the receiver is getting a little thin, but there is no rust, and the barrel is pristine. Just beautiful.

Oh, and it had a trooper's tag in the buttstock. I'm sorry, but that is just an utterly cool thing. It might be the most fascinating thing about a milsurp that I have ever bought. Mine was issued in 1932. :D

Mike

Check out auction arms and gunbroker (www.auctionarms.com and www.gunbroker.com). Find one that has been well photographed and you'll know exactly what to expect.

They all seem to have excellent bores and excellent triggers. The biggest variable is the stock damage, and to a lesser extent, the amount of blue remaining on the metal.

Yes.
If you got 1932 off of the buttstock tag that is the birth year of the Swiss Soldier to whom it was issued.
But I was apparently unclear about what it meant. ;)

Mike ;)

Mine was issued in 1932.
The date on the tag is usually the soldier's year of birth.
Under the buttplate, there will be a number stamped on the butt of the stock showing the year the riflewas made, there usually is a date on the bolt shroud as well. Beech stocks weren't produced until around 1943.

+1 on Aim Surplus

I ordered a walnut stock and hand select and requested all matching numbers. I got one that is all matching, with excellent bluing and no beaver chewed stock. It has a troop tag under then buttplate. I've not checked the stock to see if it has any markings or numbers yet but it's in very good condition.
