I want to get setup to reload for my newly acquired K31 and have read, here and elsewhere, about the differences in dies that are available. I understand I could use any 7.5x55 Swiss die set but using the K31-specific dies will work the brass less which I like because, well, I'm cheap, and I want as many reloads as I can get out of the brass.

Since I'm cheap I wanted to get a set of the Hornady K31 dies (their number 546361) but nobody has them for sale and Hornady says they don't have them on their production schedule and they don't know when they'll be making them again (I emailed them to ask).

It seems the only(?) alternative is Redding's K31-specifc set (their number 80235) which seems to be available but that set retails for about twice the Hornady (if Hornady's set were available).

Is there another K31-specific die alternative I'm missing?
Or does someone want to lighten their reloading die inventory of either of those (If the Redding, presumably for a bit below new retail :))?

In order to possibly avoid some questions:
Yes, I'm using brass from my inventory of GP11.
Yes, I know that GP11 brass is Berdan primed.
Yes, I've been able to deprime cases so far easily and quickly enough with an ice pick, a small hammer and an upside-down die body.
Yes, I already have Berdan primers (DAG Ammo has them in stock still).
Yes, I was able to very easily take off the three-point crimp with a Lee chamfer tool (I do this for once-fired HXP .30-06, too)
Yes, I already actively reload for other calibers; .30-06, .308, 7.62x54R, 9x18mm Mak

I've been using the RCBS 7.5x55 Swiss dies for several years, never had an issue.

I've been resizing GP11 brass along with brass made by Graf's.

When I was getting dies for my K-31 I read the Redding dies were the way to go...so thats where I went. I have no experience with other dies. I have no complaints.

I have both Redding and Lee dies sets for the K31. Both sets sizing die do a fine job. The Reddings seating die is the best e r of the two sets.

I think we have a used set at the shop to get you started.

Shoot me a PM, I'll check the shelf tomorrow. We got in a large collection from a milsurp loader who passed on to the benchrest in the sky, and all of his kit was in real good shape.

The Redding dies are the way to go, the difference is in the body diameter of the K31 chamber. The ammunition dimensions were never changed from the original GP11 dimensions, so that the ammo would work in both the 1911 rifles and the K31. When they brought out the K31, the front of the chamber was made a bit larger, probably to improve reliability with dirty ammunition. Using a sizing die that reduces the fired K31 case to the original dimensions requires a lot more effort, and works the brass unnecessarily.

Another option is to contact C&H Tool and Die. Send them some of your fired brass and they will cut a custom die for you at what may surprise you as a very reasonable price.

Since you really only need it for one rifle, you could get away with just a neck sizer in 7.5....

Neck sizing only on chamber formed brass is going to prolong your brass life considerably.

The straight pull action has very little bolt camming ability. You might get away with neck sizing for a loading or two by sharply closing the bolt, but sooner or later you're going to need to full length size.

I've thought about that. I thought I had read others' experience seemed to indicate full length resizing was best for this but I know fire forming and neck sizing should be OK for bolt action, in general. I full length size my .30-06 because I run it through a couple Garands even though I also put it through an 03-A3 and it's too much trouble to keep all the brass segregated. I'll have to give it some more consideration.

There's no such thing as K31 specific dies. Any more than there are M1 Rifle dies.
No neck sizing only for a straight pull. Looks like a bolt action, but it's not really.
"...GP11 brass is Berdan primed..." Berdan primed brass is far more trouble than it's worth.

Sorry, Sunshine, but there is a difference between the 1911-series and K31 chambers, and Redding dies are made specifically for the K31. Don't know where you are getting your information, but it's wrong.

Measure your fired case diameters at the shoulders and at the pressure rings for about 10 rounds.

Then call the die manufacturers and ask them what diameter they manufacture their FL die at the shoulder and the pressure ring. The biggest die that will still size a few thousandths under your chamber dimensions would be the die that sizes the least and still sizes enough.
