I'm going to comb the forum after this but I wanted to pick your brain. I recently bought a 98 Mauser. It has nazi proof marks, the bluing is completely gone (early stainless model ;)), no rust or pitting in the bore, 80% matching numbers with a 98 nazi marked bayonet, scabbard and frog. Bore is good and gauges well. People always want to know this so I paid 225 out the door. My point here is I want to learn all I can about the Mauser rifle; CZ, Yugo, German. I know this is a tall order. Can anyone direct me to some good websites, books or anything that has good information. I'd love to hear any relevant comments or relevant information as well. Thank you

Ludwig Olson Bolt Action Mauser book is a good start. Proofhouse.com will give you the ordnance codes for German military rifles in WWII. Khunhausen's book is good if you want tech specs or need to diagnose and fix...

My rifle is nothing special. Not even that collectable, at the moment. I've watched mil surp prices sky rocket in the past 3-5 years. Figured I'd buy a Mauser while they still are out there to be had. Missed my chance to buy a SKS or a mosin for a reasonable price. I'll try and post some pics for people to see but I'm looking for more general information. Something to refer to for general purposes. Expand my horizons and such. I'm pretty sure my rifle is a RC (Russian capture) top hand guard is serialized to the receiver but the stock is not. My bolt isn't matching to my receiver but all other parts are ( barrel bands, trigger, butt plate, magazine floor plate, rear sight, ect). Pretty sure my rifle is late war production as the waffenhams aren't stamped on every square inch of the gun. I would like to know more about the stock. It doesn't have the bolt disassembly in the stock. It's marked 1.TRZ on the right rear part of the stock. By the grip is marked (9) or (6) not sure of orientation and BK inside a square.

Sorry guys. My iPad crashes every time I try and upload photos. No computer either. I spend money on real toys not electronics. I'll keep trying but I don't see it happening.

Well for startz you could tell us what the markings are on the top of the receiver. Among other markings is there an X stamped anywhere on the receiver or bbl?
The 1.TRZ is post war Jugoslav so the stock is from a post war reissue rifle.
Beyond that, based on what you have not said, I can't tell you anything!

Is the barrel original or is it a Yugo re-barrel? I have a K98k with all the Nazi proof marks in tact except for the barrel which was replaced by a Yugo barrel. The Russians usually removed the Nazi markings, but not always.

Captures generally have a little X on the rec. somewhere. They generally did not spend the ttime grinding anything that I have seen. This is not the mum deal with Japanese rifles....topic for a different thread unless the OP wants to go there.

If you have something that is "numbers matching" even at 90% I would eye that with caution. It really just does not happen.

$225 out the door is a smokin good deal even on a RC, at least around here it is. If the gun is a M48 that is still a real good deal, but I don't see many of those with german markings....but that flavor of "mauser" is about the most inexpensive.

Can you tell us the date and the letter code on the rifle...bnz, dou, usually 3 digits with a letter and a couple numbers or three letters. That will tell you where the rifle was made.

Check out the different collector sites...even the non specific german sites usually have a section about the german rifles.

Have fun, it is a great bit of history to explore.

Pix...

Dashman 77--The standard snarky comment is, "without pictures, it never happened." But further, without pictures, we are all just guessing as to what you have. Pls try again to get pix into your thread.

I appreciate the interest. The goal of this post was to be pointed in a direction. I enjoy getting down and dirty in research. I mostly gave a description of what I had so anyone posting could send me in a relevant direction to start looking for information. My interest is not just in my rifle but Mauser rifles in general. I guess I want to know where experts go or went to, to get their information. And yes I know I got a good deal. Percs to working at the shop I bought it from!

Did not read my reply? I ask:

Without that info NO ONE can answer questions about your rifle! At this point what you have ask is basicly the same as: I have this car I want info about, it has white wall tires and large hubcaps, What can you tell me about it?

You want references to other gun boards where you can get your questions answered. With the info you have given here you will get the same response as here from all of them! I'm on at least a dozen different gun boards and my response on ALL of them would be the same as it was here!!!
NO info from you gets NO info from us!

I repeat: if you want to do the research yourself, Ludwig Oldon's Bolt Action Mauser book is as good a place to start as any. If you get stuck, post it on here or another forum as there are always one or two of us with time to kill that can probably get you past whatever sticking point you're at.

If you want a good shop manual for Mauser rifles I would suggest any of the manuals by Jerry Kuhnhausen. Just remember they are technical shop manuals.

No, thank you mountain bear! I already checked out proof house. I have it saved on my browser. Im running down the books you suggested as we speak. Thank you for your help. I can sense frustration from everyone. If I could up load pictures I would. Since I can't I don't expect anyone to ID my rifle. I was simply looking for source material to read and learn. There can be a lot of information out there and not all reputable or accurate. I wanted to know where experts turn for information. What sources of information is credible and accurate. Again, I'm not looking for someone to ID my rifle. I'm looking for good sites and books to read and learn about the Mauser rifle. Sorry for any confusion.

I'll take you up on that offer! I'm sure at some point I'm going to need something cleared up or clarified. Hands on, worldly experience is important. Can't always get what you need from a book. Thank you again for understanding the whole point of my post mountainbear!
