I found this Ka Bar about 15 yrs ago. It is a smooth handled Mk-2 with a thinner than usual blade. The blade has a grey patina to it and is like a razor. On both sides of the blade is stamped "Sample D". Anyone know anything about it? The leather washer handle behind the guard is very loose but nothing is rotted off. If and when I get my digital camera running, I'll post a photo of it. But in the meanwhile, has anybody got any info on this knife?

Not to steal your thread, but since there'll hopefully be some Ka-Bar experts checking in, thought I'd pick their brains as well. I had a Ka-Bar when I was in Boy Scouts that was stolen, I haven't seen another one like it. It was the standard fighting knife blade but it had what I believe was a micarta handle. Has anyone ever seen one of these?

That, to me, sounds like one of the "Sailor Made" models. I have one that has red and clear plexiglass handles. It was a popular material for machinists on board ships to use for replacement handles. Handles were rounded off and very nicely contoured. The other old Ka-Bar I have is very unique. It was customized as a fighter. Where the fuller is on the blade is ground out! Yes...gone, big hole..POOF!! the edge is totally re-profiled..higher grind, almost convex. The guard and handles have been flattened on the inside(if you were to wear it on your right hip) The false edge is brutally sharp too. Somebody took their time making this one. It is very fast in the hands and just plain scary sharp!!!
