We did find a hole once a couple years ago. I'ld say we got a good 200-250 yards. Its actually my uncles. Usually we don't do any aiming or anything. We just like to make noise. :D And believe me, it does make noise.

I have a Coehorn that fires V-8 juice cans full of cement, and will fling them a couple hundred yards.

Great fun and makes a great racket on the 4th of July.

Shoot that sucker through a crony!

Post a pic of the lead ball after you find it. Measure the distance traveled.

You got a lot of work to do! :D

Shooting a three-pound lead ball (not to mention the flame and smoke of the blackpowder) through a chrony might have interesting consequences for the screens . . . :what:

:D

I don't remember stating a requirement that the crony remain undamaged... :D

Lets start a disposable crony fund for this project. I'll donate the first $5 because I have no idea how much they cost. :neener:

Good idea to not include your face in the photos - I'm sure the BATFE(ces) bureaucrats will take your good clean fun as a personal insult and a witch hunt will ensue.

I say that if a man wants to blow stuff up or shoot a home made canon on his own land and no one gets hurt, it's none of their damn bidniss!:D

Hi progunner1957,

Actually he is lucky in that Black Powder cannons which can not fire fixed ammunition are not illegal or regulated by the BATF. If you haven't played with one yet you should, besides the amount of powder they use they are truly a blast.

Now that I think of it, I said 250 on a couple other forums but.......I'll have to measure when I get to work with some of our ariel images. I had to be more than that. It was about 4-5 years ago when we went searching for it and found one. After that we haven't tried to look for anymore.

Backwoodsman had a good article on a guy who made a swivel gun. When I build my compound in the woods that is going to be part of my defense, a swivel gun and a hook for my arm.

A mate of mine's got a 2 pounder swivel gun.

You want to see real destruction, set up about a half a dozen roughly man sized masonite targets in a loose group about fifty yards away, set that sucker to fire horizontaly, and load her up with buckshot or "Navy" ball!

"Old Growler" (my mates 2 pounder), cuts a swath about two feet wide and ten foot long under such circumstances!

YESSSSS!

Great thread! Shooting stuff is fun. Does anyone know of a source for swivel gun plans?

Thanks,

James

Tsonda, check out The Backwoodsman

Sep/Oct 2005. It isn't a real set of plans but it looks pretty easy to reverse engineer. Bert Gummer needed one of these for his basement instead of one of those sissy elephant guns;) You can buy back issues at Backwoodsmanmag.com

Remember, before firing a swivel gun it is always appropriate to yell:

"Arrrr, I'll never surrender me booty!"

Unless, of course, you're into that kind of thing. ;)

Making an explosive charge (shell) for a BP cannon would constitute manufacturing a DD though, correct?

Lyar, lyar, pants on fire! I see that yaller kan o' Pyrodex blackpowder substitute.

Three pounds of lead is a lot to throw. I hope you guys were able to recover the lead for refiring. I've a beer can mortar and shoot soda cans filled with plaster. Keep the angle set to 45 degrees and adjust your powder for shot placement. That's how the soldiers did it in the Civil War when they were engaged in trench (siege) warfare.

Friend had a oil can mortor that would throw the plaster of paris filled cans two hundred yards or so. He was lobbing from his backyard which was separated from interstate 45 by pasture owned by the texas department of corrections. He would only shoot when the big bull was at the other end o the field and nobody was riding around thefield on a horse.
