Riordan takes himself out of running for Calif. governor

Thursday, August 7, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(08-07) 17:52 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --

Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan took himself out of the running for governor late Thursday and endorsed Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"I have decided not to enter the race for governor," Riordan said in a three-paragraph statement.

"This recall election offers us a choice: We can either continue with politics as usual in California, or we can elect someone who works on behalf of every Californian, not just the special interests," he said. "As I have said many times, I believe Arnold Schwarzenegger is a very talented man who would make an excellent governor."

Riordan had been considering running if Schwarzenegger did not. The two men are friends and both are moderate Republicans.

Advisers to both men said Riordan was taken by surprise by Schwarzenegger's announcement Wednesday night on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" that he was entering the race. The former mayor had been assembling staff and preparing for a campaign on the assumption Schwarzenegger was not in the race.

But Schwarzenegger said Riordan called him Thursday morning to wish him well. Later in the day they met to discuss Schwarzenegger's campaign, Schwarzenegger aides said.

Looks like ARnold's competition is beginning to self-terminate. (Sorry, I just had to do it)

Good. Ditto Issa, who's a better human being but didn't stand a chance. He gained a lot of credibility by backing down; he might be successful in a Senate race.

Next up: either Simon or McClintock has to bow out. Both good men, but...the field is too crowded. Of the two, I really think McClintock has the better chance. His whole anti-car-tax drive has to really take off, and the people of the state have to realize it's time to put an adult in that office. (Davis does NOT qualify, he acts like a badly spoiled brat at times; rumors of assaults on staff and other temper-tantrum issues are rampant.)

In the end it will the satanic Davis versus the archangel Arnold. I
like McClintock but California isn't ready for too much reason. Reasoned
argument is, well, like real slow and boring, dude, and Arnold will
promise plenty of fast-paced action for the ADDicts of today.

I keep hearing about "special interests." Seems to me the real
"special interest" is the vast number of people who believe they have
a God-given right to raid someone else's wallet.
