As many of you might have heard, I recently came into a Remington 870 Police. (Yay for me!) It has a 20" barrel and a 7 round tube. So I'm looking at options for keeping an extra 7 rounds organized and ready. Here's what I want:

The shell holder in question must be separate from the shotgun. No side saddles, butt-cuffs, or slings.

It should be ridged or semi-ridged. Not floppy. Good, heavy leather would be great.

I should be able to attach it to my belt without removing said belt. Clips or snap loops would be great.

Ideally, it should hold seven 12 ga. rounds.

I'm looking for something like this, only less "cowboy", seven round capacity, and the desired means of belt attachment.

Minimalist design is good.

Can anyone help me find what I'm looking for?

(If the link to the auction isn't kosher, I apologize. The mods may moderate as necessary.)

Try the Speed Strippers from Dave's Metal Works, they come in 4 and 6 round models, they have a spring loaded clip on the back, just snap them on your belt.I use them for 3 gun matches, they stay on the belt really well and the rounds don't fall out.

Hmm, that looks interesting, even if it is one round shy.

How does it work, exactly? How are the shells retained? Will they fall out if I need to leap over a river of lava:rolleyes:

Seriously, this looks kind of neat, but the site is a little skimpy on the details.

Oh, and does it matter which way the shells are oriented? Will the brass go to either side?

There are 2 pieces of spring steel at the top that keep the rounds from bouncing out.If you look at the back view, you can see the pieces.Looking at the front view, you can see the loop just above the top round. You can turn them upside down and shake them, the ammo will stay put. I think they will hold your rounds if your leaping over a river of lava, but it depends how gracefully you land!
The brass can go on either side.
Hope this helps.

I'd say that the speed strippers from daves are just the ticket for you. They don't hold an exact seven, but two of the four rounders would work fine too. it's easier to handle four rounds in your hand at once than six, anyhow. At least for me it is. There are people in this world who can palm a basketball. I'm doing good to palm a tennis ball. Six in the hand at a time is a bit much for me.

Anyhow, as for the hows and such of the item, the brass can go either direction, and the shells are held in place by wire springs at the top. The only disadvantage to these critters is that they hold the shells really well when they're full, but one or two shells left in it will bounce up and down, and eventually turn sideways and fall out the bottom. For grabbing all the shells at once though, I've never seen anything faster than these things.

The Speed Strippers come with 2 plastic spacers of different thicknesses that velcro into the inside. The spacer you use depends on the ammo you're using. Magnum and foreign made ammo is a little longer than standard US ammo, so just add the spacer if needed to keep the rounds from bouncing as Mat described.
Here's a link a site with better photos of the stripper, scroll down toward the bottom of the page, click on the picture for a bigger image.
