Just saw one in a gunshop today for the first time and I was very impressed. They had 9mm and .40 models. I was interested in the .40 cal model because of the extra power. I was wondering if any of you have one of these guns and could give me an evaluation of it? It was selling at the gunshop for $335. At 29.5" long (when not folded) and 4 lbs unloaded it seems like a delightful trunk/car gun. I was wondering the following...

1. Some models come that accept glock mags, and some accept Beretta, which mag type would be better? Which brand of mags are cheaper/easier to get in .40S&W?

2. How much extra velocity will a 16" barrel give a .40S&W round?

3. Can you carry a gun such as this? This article seems to suggest you can,

4. Where is a god place to get fair priced glock .40 S&W mags? Are the mags in this auction fairly priced? Will they work? http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=10329357

Any personal experience with the gun would be greatly appreciated.

For those who don't know, a Kal Tec 2000 is a self-loading carbine for pistol cartridges. Different versions of the SUB-2000 will accept most modern handgun magazines. There is a GLOCK version. Further, the SUB-2000 has a greatly extended range compared to a handgun. The superior precision is also very useful against small or partially covered targets at shorter range. The amount of training to master the SUB-2000 is only a fraction of that required for a handgun.

Got one..

I have one in 9mm that takes Glock mags. It is lots of fun to shoot and reasonably accurate given the sights and caliber.

I think that Beretta mags are cheaper now, but if we're lucky that will change in Fall'04.

2. How much extra velocity will a 16" barrel give a .40S&W round?

I don't know, mine's 9mm.

Check your state laws. It is defined as a rifle, so you may run afoul of game control laws designed to prevent poaching and road hunting.

Try CDNN. THey usually have good deals on Glock factory hi-caps. That auction looks like a darned good deal for those mags.

i also have the Glock 9mm version. i'm having trouble with the mag catch/release right now. its going back for an evaluation and possible repairs. i think $335 is a litte high but not too bad. the rifle is fun fun fun! its pretty darn accurate to boot. i think you'll be stisfied with your purchase if you decide to do so.

I own the Glock-mag/.40cal version, and it is bloody fun to shoot, and almost shockingly accurate(within the limited range of a pistol cartridge). As long as you can get your face down on the buttstock tube and use the sights(some guys I've known cannot do so), it's a great defensive carbine.

- In standard-length full-capacity magazines, Beretta mags are MUCH cheaper than Glock mags UNLESS you want a super-sized "stick" mag - the Scherer .40/29rd sticks can be had for $75 from www.lonewolfdist.com, but unless you're willing to take your chances with a gun-show-special USA Magazines POS, you gotta shell out BIG bucks for a 20rd Beretta 93R mag.

- I haven't shot mine over a chrono, but I'm thinking you should get around 150-200fps more in the Kel-Tec - you'll realize higher velocity gains with the lighter-bullet loadings than with the 180-grainers.

- I can fit mine into a 17" long laptop bag, that I can carry slung over my shoulder, with a few spare magazines tucked in for good measure. There's been similar discussion at www.ktog.org.

Beretta has pre-ban .40s? What size and cost and where can I get some? Thanks!

Sorry, Blain - didn't mean to get you excited. Beretta M96 .40S&W mags have always been made to hold 10 rounds only, even before the ban. The 20-rd 93R mags are in 9mm only. Of course, you MAY be able to find 30-rd .40/M96 stick-mags made by ProMag/USA/Triple K/etc. at a gun show(I haven't been looking out for them, so I couldn't tell you for sure), but I personally think those are a waste of money.

Isn't this gun sort of like a poor mans MP5 afterall? Besides the selective fire that is.... Though that gets me wondering.... a S.F. Kel-Tec Sub 2000!!!

i was very close to buying one at the last gun show i was at, but opted for a new shotgun instead. I'm not too keen on plastic sights.

American Rifleman just did a review on this little carbine a month or so ago. IIRC, they liked it.

I saw a guy with one in 9mm at the range a while back also. He didn't have any trouble with it that I saw. He sure looked like he was having fun and shot up quite a bit of ammo through it. The little carbine looks kinda mean when somebody is blasting away with it.

I found this thread on a search. The dealer about 2 miles from me has one in 9mm for about $270. The Scherer mags are $75. I`ve been looking for a inexpensive truck gun and anything I`ve run into used so far is over $300.

Hi Point makes a carbine also that I saw discounted to $149. No mention of a mag interchange and it doesn`t break down like the Kel Tec. This gun seems like a pretty good deal for what it`s made for.
