kent state in the site of the shootings of antiwar protestors via guard personnel....those of us that can remember it back then know about the song that was written also.."tin soldiers and nixons coming..4 dead in o-hi-o",thats been awhile though...a different day and age.theres a memorial there.

kent state is in the akron area of ohio.got my degree there and its interesting to get the news on the political scene there nowdays.kent is near which part of ohio thats full of antigun people?think cleveland and you get the picture.

No, Kent State is where on May 4, 1970 a bunch of draft dodging Ohio National Guard murdered four innocent students, none of whom were involved in the protests . I was in my sixth week of basic at Ft Lost in the Woods and remember the NG's and AR's in my basic unit and what they were. :fire:
 
I seem to recall the "peaceful" protestors started throwing rocks at the NG soldiers first. Not a justification, but certainly shows both sides share some blame.

Actually, it is surprising that I am as libratarian/conservative as I am with KSU in my background. I suppose that it had an effect on me, but one that pushed me away rather than pulling me in.

I spent 7 years there and graduated in 92. I now live in the next town over. I try to avoid kent as much as possible. Doesn't surprise me though.

This isn't very surprising. I live about 15 minutes from Kent. A couple years back they were trying to purchase a couple M16s for the police department (can't remember if it was campus or city) and people had a HISSY FIT because "the m16 had so much bad history there." This is , of course, referring to the NG incident involving M14s (or was it Garands?). People there are just clueless.

I hope those kids fight it. I was lucky because my college was the exact opposite. We had rifle, air pistol and trap shooting classes. We also had a rifle club , a pistol club, a varsity rifle team, and a varsity pistol team.
 
After Kent State, protests continued but rock-throwing was in notable decline.

Police quickly learned that the rock-throwers were not in front, and began watching those in the rear of protest groups. The pattern was to throw rocks or bottles and then move even farther back, soon leaving the scene of the protest. I saw this at one protest event at the state capital in Austin...

I was riding with the Austin PD some, in late '72/early '73. One night after a protest, a youngish guy was arrested for drunk and fighting and brought into the station. He was babbling about how important he was in the protest movement and the usual "You fascist pigs can't do this to me!" BS. Turned out he was from somewhere up north. There were a fair number of "agents provocateurs" going around the country organizing protests. Stir up trouble and leave.

Whitman did his UT tower thing in August, 1966.

It was a tragedy, but your statement is a lie. Of the four students killed three were actively involved in the rioting, and only one, Alison Krause, may have been an innocent victim.

The truth is there was a great deal of violence, in the town of Kent, and on campus leading up to the May 4th shootings. Very dangerous, very violent situation, and all the Guardsman had to deal with the rioters was tear gas, and their rifles. During the final riot, the students and other protesters began advancing on the Guardsman, and were picking up the hot tear gas canisters and throwing them back at the Guardsman. These were not peaceful protestors by any stretch of the imagination.

Intune it demonstrates the danger presented by the crowd. Those canisters get VERY hot, and will burn your skin quickly, yet those rioters were picking them up with their bare hands and throwing them back. It demonstrates their resolve to do harm to the Guardsmen. Also, that is in addition to advancing on the Guardsmen and corning them in area they couldn't maneuver, while throwing other projectiles at the Guardsmen. It was a very dangerous situation, and the Guardsman, with limited options, did what was necessary to defend themselves.
 
I seem to remenber that of those killed one or more weren't even students at Kent State. Professional troublemakers got what they deserved.

I don't believe so; of the four students killed the one furthest away from the guardsmen was almost 200 feet and certainly was no threat, except by Ohio NG standards. Students were wounded who were 400 feet or there abouts away! Go to the campus, find Taylor Hall (College of Architecture building); the 'grass knoll' is on the left as you face the front of the building, the four black markers where the victims fell are all at least a 100 feet away.

One of the best pieces on the Kent State murders is the piece that the History Channel runs.
