Keypad Safe Backup Keys

Extra keys should be the least of your worries. Keep looking around on Youtube, and you're likely to find a video of them opening one of those safes with a coat hanger through the key hole.

I recognize that it's not going to stop somebody who really wants what I've got, but what I've got also doesn't justify spending a thousand plus dollars on a safe. I need something better than chaining them to my bed that can fit inside my apartment closet. If a smash and grab robber doesn't have time to get them, I'm happy.

Frank - I found it. I never liked digital/electronic locks but now I dislike them even more.

Is this for real. Is the safe a POS or a quality one...or doesn't it matter.

There are quality electronic locks. Those don't have keyed overrides. They're still not as reliable as a good S&G dial lock. Put it this way, the quality RSC makers don't offer much of a warranty on the digital locks but will offer a lifetime warranty on the S&G.

The main difference in lock quality is if the lock carries a UL rating. If the lock is UL then there will be no key back up, and thus the coat hanger trick won't work.

Some safes aren't using UL rated locks, because it's cheaper. All of the same known name mechanical lock manufacturers make electronic locks, and there are a few up and comers (some with pretty good track records) who are just in the electronic lock business.
