Kids in the park

Afterwards I felt a little bad that I had called the cops and the whole thing escalated, but then I thought a minute and realized that I did not feel all that bad.

Nice.

Another vote for you doing the right thing.

I can't imagine the little animals shooting little kids at the park...I think that if I had my kid shot by someone with a paintball gun there would be hell to pay.

I wouldn't have a problem with someone plinking safely with a pellet gun, so long as safety was observed.
What those kids did was horrible...

I was a victim of that kinda crap when I was a small "and scrawny) kid... I can't STAND bullies. There's one thing that brings me to a rage, and that's a bully.

suppose you looked out your window and saw me in my back yard with my pump pellet rifle, shooting into a trap. would you ask me to stop?

Naw. I care a lot more about malum in se crimes than malum prohibitum.* If your backdrop is appropriate, you're not endangering anyone or encroaching on their rights, so you're on perfectly firm moral ground with me.

Anyway, shooting a pellet gun on your own property is often allowed; it is in my town.

i'm taking shots at a light pole about 30 yards away...

Whoops. You just lost my support. Now you're shooting across a public thoroughfare, and we're supposed to trust that you'll keep an eye out for people in your field of fire?

No. And by the rest of your post, I think you came to agree.

----------------------------------------
*A crime malum in se is argued to be inherently criminal (theft, assault, murder...); whereas a crime malum prohibitum is argued to be criminal only because the law has decreed it so. (drugs, consensual sex, zoning, etc.)

Spiff-
I wouldn't have bothered you, probably woulda wandered over to play. Had you been trying to pop squirrels of the phone lines or fence (no backstop), Id have suggested that you knock it off, but as long as you're following the four rules (as appropo to a pellet gun in the back yard), no problem.

Last Fall the neighbor's kids were popping away at soda cans in their back yard with a BB gun. I watched a few minutes, then let them know I was watching (complimented them on their marksmanship and use of proper backstop). I know their dad (AK afficianando) and that he trained them properly, but I figure a little positive re-enforcement can't hurt.

Today's young hooligans are tomorrow's leftist extremists.

That is a bizarre non-sequetor, and empirically indefensible. Maybe you just felt a need to vent . . .

Anyway, I would have been tempted to take the paintball guns from their hands and smash them in front of their eyes. Especially if my kids had been playing in the park.

roscoe, not bizarre at all. Disrespect for authority starts early and only gets worse if not 'corrected'. That lack of any self-restraint leads directly to destructive behaviours, and to things like this - http://members.myactv.net/~lgf/

To the original poster - Excellent. Well done. I would also consider a discreet visit to the Police, to pre-contact whomever would likely handle your future vandalism reports. Little turds like this, after their tears / urine dries, will remember your exchange of words, and lacking any self restraint or respect, will seek petty revenge.

Its one thing to sit and watch them shoot someone elses kid.

If they shot my kid, I would go over there and God help me hopefully avoid felonious behavior.

A paintball gun is dangerous enough to blind someone and thats maiming.

I think preventing a maiming is enough to justify deadly force. Not saying I would shoot them, but damn if they would not wake up at night worrying about me.

Being an idiot and shooting a car with a paintball is one thing - shooting small kids is intollerable - for a second longer than it takes to get over there.

The Goose

I wouldn't waist one second worrying about those brats, but their parents should be jailed for raising "feral bastards" for children.

:scrutiny: So nobody here has a problem with all of this:
In less then 5 minutes my street is all over cops. The cars are lined up and the officers are behind their cars with guns drawn. One guy gets on the loud speaker and orders them to put the guns on the ground and then lay down on the ground. The kids are laughing and think this is a joke. Then it sinks in. One kid puts his gun on the ground and lays down the other kid is still mouthing off and walking forward with the gun still in his hand. The guy on the loud speaker keeps repeating the same commands, but with increasing intensity. Finally the other kid gets it and complies. All the cops come running up on them and the kids get cuffed. There is some brief discussion which I cannot hear and the kids are placed in squad cars.

Igor,
No, I don't have a problem with police responding to the call like that. The drawn guns were over the top because non-lethal means should have been employed first by the police. A taser or those silly string guns that shoot goo onto a person that restricts their movement probably would have been better solutions however, every police department probably doesn't have that equipment available to them.

Although the report may have stated that the kids had paint ball guns, the police dispatcher and the police officers responding to the call probably heard the word 'gun' and responded based on that.

I would be willing to bet that a paintball gun could take out an eye at a longer distance than a taser would be effective. Two punks with paintball guns could overwhelm an officer or two if all they had at their disposal were non-lethal and non-impact weapons.

Goose...

"Afterwards I felt a little bad that I had called the cops and the whole thing escalated, but then I thought a minute and realized that I did not feel all that bad."

FWIW I think you did the right thing, both times.

As far as the cops' response, well this IS the People's Commonwealth.

I'd have called the police. Today's young hooligans are tomorrow's leftist extremists.
oh come on, no need to hammar ona group of people. you dont like being sterotyped as a right wing Uber Christian KKK member because you like shooting do you? Well people like me who ARE left wing libs dont enjoy being sterotyped as hooligans just because we believe in workers rights and fair wages. lets be kind shall we?

I think the cops reponded that way because most people couldn't tell the difference between a PB marker and a real gun. They were probably erring on the side of caution. Maybe one of the cops had a kid that played a lot in that park??

Don't take it personally BtK. That's SW's response to everything. He sees leftist extremists behind every blade of grass.

Chris

Thanks for the heads up...

i personally try not to talk to people who are too left or too right wing theyre scary.
if they arent Michael Moore theyre Rush Limbaugh both are full of crap and both have too many skeletons in the closet.

You did just fine. At least you had the guts to do something about the problem. Most people just stick their worthless heads in the ground and pretend it isn't happening.

A few years ago some local kids, 8-12 were throwing rocks at a stop sign. Do you wanna know why? Because there was a hornet's nest hanging from it and hornet buzzing all over the place. No, these were not future national merit scholars. I didn't really mind, and was hoping they'd get stung for their troubles when they decided that they needed increased firepower. The only thing those hornets understand is firepower, ya know. They got BIGGER rocks. Now they're beginning to knock the stop sign over, and this seems to make them more enthusiastic about their escapade of stupidity. Alright, now they'd willfully damaging public property, so I stood up and said,

ENOUGH!

I meant to say it loud, but I didn't think it would echo off the nearby houses. I sounded like the Jolly Green Giant. After I finished admiring my vocal virility, I noticed that the mental defectives were all giving me dirty looks and eventually... regretfully... they walked away.

Two minutes later a police car arrived. I still they that they all should have sent me a thank-you card for yelling at them.

Well, there are 'paint guns' and then there are PAINT GUNS! Kids have no business being in a park with 'paint guns' shooting the stuff all over trees and definately not shooting anyone that wasn't playing with them but if someone ever shoots my kids with a PAINT GUN, the parents of those kids and I are going to have a quick talk about it. And the police will absolutely be called. I'm pretty sure it would be easy to build an assault and battery case against anyone shooting a real paint gun at a little kid.

You did the right thing... definately! :)

Kind of OT, but related...

You are walking down the street and you get pegged by a paintball. You see two 12-14 year olds laughing...what do you do?

>>Afterwards I felt a little bad that I had called the cops and the whole thing escalated, but then I thought a minute and realized that I did not feel all that bad.

I would been laughing my butt off the entire time. I probably
would have filmed it for posterity!! N'er a shred of remorse
would have entered my veins

Goose - which park is this? I work in Burlington.

Igor... no problems here at all.

FWIW, these kids just got an early lesson about 'guns' in MA.
