I run this youth league/small bore program at my local club. It's a program that runs about 36 weeks and it's main focus is on firearm safety and the fundamentals of shooting. The kids in the program range from 10 to just under 18 and have a very varied background in terms of shooting. Some are "farm" kids that shoot at home or with their family all the time, others are kids that have move to the wild west of the Berkshires from all over and have never see or touched a gun in their lives.

Anyway we've been doing some very general shooting practice getting the kids used to load, ready, fire...sight alignment sight alignment and sight picture, lots of safety information and drills about safe gun use, the golden rules of gun safety, etc and so on...

One of the things we do to enforce how important each shot is is we have a small "shoot for the Cash" at the end of each session. One of the Instructors will pony up $5 and we cut out the small "5" from one of the corners. We paste that to the center of a target, run it out 50 feet. Each shooter gets ONE round, they can use any of the guns they want...and they shoot for the center...if they hit that very small target, they get the $5.

Well the first week, all the kids go, and one of the smallest kids that's second to last (and not a particularly great shooter-at this point) walks up to the line and drills that thing dead center. It took him about a minute to get what he felt was a good sight picture but I think he learned a valuable lesson...in the last two weeks, his scores have gone up quite a bit as he now takes more time with each shot.

Second week, no one scored a win.

Third week, I decided to up the anty to $10...and made the target a little harder...center of the target had to be hit, the center bull is like .20 inches in diameter. (so smaller than a .22 bullet). First kid steps up to the line...takes about 45 seconds. and bam... fist shot wins. All the other kids were bummed as the shooting stops after there is a winner.
So they convinced me to make other shots to the center worth a $1...out of 10 kids I'm out $17...I think these kids are ringers.

A solid investment in the future. I'm willing to bet those $5's and $10's will reap more benefits than one can imagine.

Thank you for your time, and ...err monies... teaching and passing it on.

Okay - I feel old now. :p My Shooting Coach was a old Gunny, he used copper pennies, if we hit those, we rec'd a silver dime or quarter....

Perhaps there is truth in " the more things change the more they remain the same".

Give a kid a chance to win money - kids will get you everytime.

Truth be told , I think old gunny got a kick out of buying rolls of dimes and quarters....;)

Sir,

Well done. You are ensuring the future of the shooting sports.

I spent a year at North Adams State. If you don't mind my asking, whereabouts in the Berkshires can one shoot?

Well there are a couple places...Washington has a sportsmens club, with like 300 acres of land for hunting.

Lee, Lenox, West Stockbridge all have sportsmens clubs, If you just wanted to come out and shoot, I have a private range...good to about 250 yards. I have a larger range but it's for testing only...good to about 800 yards.

If you have them shooting that well, you must be a good instructor. My hat's off to you.

It sounds like you're doing a heckuva job, and I thank you for investing in our childrens' and nation's future.:) I will give your 'shoot for cash' idea a try at the next family shoot; might even let the BIL give it a try, that fiver's safe if he uses his Glock. :p (But not if my Sister does! )
My Dad taught my sister and well, he stressed safety long before we ever got to shoot, as well as afterwards, and made our training hard work, but rewarding. It definitely paid off, as I went on to train others in the Army, and am now training my sons, and my sister's kids as well (and the BIL, he was Air Force.) All of them are good shots already (well... I'm still working on the BIL) , my 11 year old will soon pass me up, and all modesty aside, that's not easy.;)

Good on 'ya, SOT_II!:D

Great job, SOT_II! You're making responsible, effective riflery lessons be fun! :D

Thank you so much for give your time to the kids. Good men doing good things with kids makes all the difference, when it comes to rearing new good men and women.

(I don't mean to diminish the great works by good women, but the real shortage in our society is the good MALE rolemodel.)

Well Done, sir! I can't think of a better long-term investment. Thanks from all of us.

And entropy, there's no way I'd shoot against my sister for money. She's gooood with rifles. I might be able to take her on clays, though... Or maybe that's just what she wants me to think. ;)

That's great Happy Bob! My sister and I both worked at a trap range, she's pretty godd with a shotgun; matter of fact she's been bugging her huband to buy an 1100 like she used to have. In slow fired pistol, we're about equal, I'm better at timed/combat type shooting. She never did a lot of rifle shooting, but she's deadly with their Marlin Camp Gun.;)

Reminds me of a buddy of mine who did the same with a $50 bill...and his wife......her very first time shooting,1st shot....HE learned a valueable lesson.....
