Kimber 1911s Prove So Fragile & Unreliable, N.C. Law Enforcement Agency Scraps Them

And has been said, what's with a Alcohol Enforcement Agency (what, exactly is that; a fractal of a localized version of ATF?) with Sig 552s?

Is this an agency that enforces Liquor Licenses, or runs and guns against illegal white lightning stills down on NC?

Do they also have Bradley Fighting Vehicles?

They're a state wide agency that enforces ABC laws. Mostly watching businesses that sell alcohol.
They often subcontract out of other local agencies as well.
Bible Belt...what do you expect but tough liquor laws and enforcement.

They have the jurisdiction and power to charge and arrest for any crime, but focus on alcohol.

But anyways...

Why would they of bought kimbers anyway?

well at least they didn't use the tax payers dollar to add to their personal collection. it was funded through their seizures. A.L.E. is a very small good 'ole boy agency. i personally don't care what weapon they choose to use. losing any firearm is a problem, but a select fire assault rifle is too much to lose. they should have used some of their seizure money to buy trunk vaults.

As an ex-Charlottean, I have seen this level of B.S. in all forms of ANY local-gov't in Mecklenburg county. This to the point of moving a few counties away just to avoid Charlotte. Personally, I have been shooting a Kimber Classic Target and their version of a commander for years. The Target was one of their first year or two production pistols and have Dillionized tens of thousands of rounds over years through it. The only problems with feeding their tight chambers came from a set of worn out Dillion 45acp dies and this went back to excellent feeding when the new set of dies arrived.

The story has external extractor failure written all over it.
Wow, when was the last time you even seen a Kimber let alone shot one? KIMBER DOES NOT PRODUCE EXTERNAL EXTRACTOR MODELS ANYMORE!

I live in N C and it really riles me to the highest point. I own a Sig P229R made around 1995 and it is just as reliable as it was the day I got it and it was a CPO which means it was probably a LE gun. Sigs just don't fail after two or three years. If the Kimbers are as un-reliable as these guys say then I fault the person who made the decision to buy them for not researching it further prior to making a purchase of this magnetude. It's no wonder N C taxes keep going up every year.COLOR]

kimbers with internal extractors have to be as good as stock Springfields and Colts right??

I just got a 1911 again after having one with a 1 in 50 jam/failure rate.
A Mil-Spec Springfield 1911 a1 after 220 rounds in one session i had one FTE/Double Feed.
Loose extractor Issue,
Hard time trusting 1911's in 2011.

Mine was an expensive piece of crap....I could not wait to trade it off for a Taurus 92
and some ammo and mags

Kimber TLE problems.

FWIW, I'm not a fan or a non-fan of Kimber, but when I SEE malfunctions like this, rather than just reading accounts of them, it does have a greater impact on my biases and preconceptions, as it seems more credible.

The choice of Kimbers in the first place seems to me more of a decision by "gun nuts" than by working cops. Usually the simpler the better for police weapons, which is why the long affinity for revolvers and the current preference for Glocks and Glock clones.

KISS doesn't get simpler than:

1. Pull it out
2 Point it
3. Pull the trigger
4. BANG
5. Repeat 3 as necessary

They are hooking themselves up with nice guns every 3 years or so, easy case to solve. A couple years from now they will order up some M&P45's or HK45's and sell off the current issue to themselves for $200-300.

The only thing that video confirms is that Nutnfancy is a moron who likes to put up videos with inflammatory titles to push his BUY GLOCK agenda ... but there's nothing new there. When talking about the Kimber, officer Jarred states "I've run it for six years with no problem, I've put a lot of rounds through it". OK, so his pistol isn't reliably ejecting cases at this point ... so what ... fix it and move on. Officer Jarred didn't even bother to bring a new spring with him ... good news for Nutnfancy though so he can convince all of his fellow morons out there that Kimbers suck. They didn't even mention the ejection pattern which is one of the most basic 1911 diagnostic "tools". This isn't rocket science although it probably is to Nutnfancy given his moronic comments such as "it's like a double feed" (4:07) .... NOT!! My dogs have superior problem solving skills.

Of course, I'm just another deluded Kimber owner that has shot 294 rounds in the last two USPSA (IPSC) matches without a single issue and over 800 rounds in practice and load development without issues. I use a Kimber Tactical Entry II and I don't need to look at the box to tell you what I'm shooting. I shoot my reloads which consist of 200gr Oregon Trail LRNFP bullets, 5.5gr W231 and Winchester LP primers, PMC or Federal brass. Factory 230gr FMJ has never been a problem for this pistol with 100% function with four different manufacturers. Maybe after six years and tens of thousands of rounds I can make a video with Nutnfancy .... assuming my Kimber starts to have ejection issues. However, if it's still running flawlessly, that won't be newsworthy.

I've said many times in here how my Kimber is by far the best pistol I have ever owned.

I agree with others in here who suggest that this story has more to do with a department feeling it is entitled to switch out its guns every two years and buy them for a cut rate as personal weapons than it does to do with there being anything wrong with the guns. They seem to have no problem coming up with a reason regardless of what the gun is. It's like they are on contract with Verizon. :)

i bought a .45 acp kimber desert warrior from a friend(original owner) several weeks ago with the internal extactor in ex used condition. i took it apart and cleaned it and lightly lubed it( kano croil). on a very cold friday morning(12 degrees) i fired 200 rounds of winchester hardball and 50 rounds of target reloads, all 200 rounds of hardball were shot with out a hitch, but i had many fte with the reloads(all fired). it fed the 185gr semi wadcutters with out a hitch,it just would not eject the cases but the gun is set up for harball,20-22lbs recoil spring and the temp of 12 degrees that was the problem not the gun. eastbank, ps the reloads were target loads at about 600-700fps.

For the record, I posted the original article in a sarcastic quip because...yes...I found the story humorous, to say the least, and not due the 'official story line.'

That department and the reasons given for their use of weapons and change of weapons (not to mention their self-funding methods), have STRANGE written all over it.

JOHNBT, i should have said i wiped all internal parts with kroil, not slopped it all over. i knew it was going to be 12-14 degrees when i shot the kimber and kroil is a lite oil that has great penertation qualities, cleaning the kimber after shooting it was very easy and most of the carbon wiped right off. for long term lube i like a tuflon lube that dries completly. i also shot my S&W 3913 in 9mm that same day(100 rounds winchester white box) with out a hitch. eastbank.

For some reason I'm amused that whenever there's a "Your most unreliable firearm" or "Worst gun purchase" thread everyone posts the Kimber they bought, and whenever there's a "Kimbers are unreliable" thread everyone posts that Kimbers are perfectly reliable.

i,m not saying the kimber is the best gun ever, only how the one i own has performed, i had a S&W 17 in .22 that was out of time when new and took a trip back to S&W to be fixed, are all S&W 17,s bad? i think not. eastbank.

My interpretation:

The radar gun is a hair dryer and thus, wont work

??The pistols are Kimbers and thus, wont work???

Problems??

I've had a Kimber CDP PRO II for some time and put easily 1500 rounds through it and have NEVER had a problem with a FTE or a FTF. EVER! It's accurate...a bitch to field strip....but...it's so far been a very dependable pistol. It has never had a problem with any ammo..cheap..(Tula) or quality stuff. I am however just one fish in a sea. I love my Glock as well...but I have had a few jams with certain ammos. Not the Kimber though! Go figure! There are only two pistols that a law enforcement agency should consider. GLOCK and S&W M&P. They are inexpensive, easy to maintain and not usually finicky.

The only experience I have with Kimber is from the early (1st gen) Custom Classic I have. It's proven 100% reliable with all JHP and FMJ I've tried in the 10+ years I've owned it. It will choke on SWC occasionally whereas my RIA feeds them just fine, but I suppose the closer tolerances are to blame for that.
For many years, it served as my bed stand gun, so I do indeed trust it implicitly with defensive loads.

As much as I love the 1911 and occasionally will carry one in winter months, I would think for law enforcement, there are more suitable designs out there in today's world (suitable being simplified and of higher capacity).

Where is the purchasing oversight? How could an agency that rarely gets into gunfights need to outfit their agents with thousand dollar pistols? How could Sig assault rifles purchased in 2006 possibly be not up to snuff for what this agency's operations? Guns don't just become "obsolete" in 4 years. Suspicious.
