I was looking for a completely different setup but ran into a 8400 advanced tactical rifle at my local shop and am jumping on it for about 2300 (trying to get it out the door for that price).

I want to get something to use it for medium range practice but most ranges here are 100 to 200 yards.

I also want to take it pig hunting if that ever comes up(I'm not worried about its weight for that).

So I was thinking I could get a Leupold setup in the 500 to 1000 range, but for pig hunting and the shooting range distances We'll be using it for can I get away with a much smaller Trijicon ACOG?

If I get the acog, will it still be easy for my dad to use? I was getting a scoped rifle in the first place to save his eyes some stress, iron sights on a handgun eat up his eyes pretty quickly.

If you are thinking of an ACOG with an M16 mount (most of their models) and a pic rail mount (Triji or Larue), optic height will be about 1.5" from rail. May be a tad high for the Kimber, although I'm just talking.

Also consider the short eye relief of the 4x ACOGs. I have a lot of positives with the compact ACOGs with the special ring mount. This version gives you 3 different heights to choose from. Downside is max magnification is 3x.
