Is there enough difference between the contours of the slide of a standard 1911 and one of the Kimber CDP's that a CDP will fit too loosely in a holster made for a regular 1911?

I'm thinking about holsters that are boned and primarily rely on the fit for retention.

I'm certainly no expert, but not that I've seen.

My uncle has a Kimber Pro CDP and I use "standard" 1911's. His gun fit just as well into my VM-II as mine do. Well enough that I got him one of those holsters so he'd stop drooling on mine.

Can't speak to other holsters, but at least the VM-II seems to show no difference in how it holds the two guns.

Holsters for Kimber 1911s

I have three Kimber 1911s 3" 4" and a 5" they are all the same frame fit except for their length. I bought two Milt Sparks VMIIs for the 3"&4" fine holsters great quality. But I also bought a Comp-Tac Undercover Pro. slide and it will take all my Kimbers. Nothing wrong with the MS VMII but checkout the Comp-Tac line of quality holsters also. http://www.comp-tac.com/

My Kimbers

I have the Ultra Carry and a Tac. Pro. their the same size 1911s as in the CDP line Kimber uses a lot of fancy this and thats in marketing ther 1911s But they are all the same size across the line. It all depends on how much you want to pay. :)

You can find the details and sizing at http://www.kimberamerica.com/index2.php

Well , I hate to disagree to a slight extent , but the radical melt on the Kimber CDP guns makes for a looser fit than most 1911s . Similarly , a Les Baer is slightly thicker . All those guns will fit and work in the same holsters within barrel length , but the fit will be different . If you have a new holster for a Colt 1911 for example , and it gets broken in and then you use it for a Baer TR Special , it will be too tight for an easy draw. The other side of the coin is that if you place the gun (Baer) in the plastic bag the holster came in (as recommended by most holstermakers) , and stretch it slightly for a good fit , the Kimber Custom CDP will be a loose fit after. Still servicable but no more "click" . I have two CDPs , a Custom and an Ultra , two Baers , and numerous Colts , Springfields etc. and have noticed this and mentioned it to Lou Alessi and had it confirmed . I repeat , the difference is slight , and you don't need a specific holster for each gun , but the Kimber just slides in more easily after being broken in by another gun . You might even prefer it ...Tom

I haven't found that the melt job on my Kimnber CDP Compact is enough to cause any fit problems in a standard Compact or Commander sized holster, though the slightly shorter length does leave just a bit of extra holster if you use one made for a Commander.
