After the last shot with the slide locked back and a empty magazine should you be able to release the slide lock and have the slide rack forward into the closed position?
Or should I have to remove the empty mag before closing the slide?

If you push the slide release while locked back on am empty mag, it should release, I've yet to see a mag spring strong enough to prevent this from hapening.

Yeah mine releases OK just a bit harder to depress the slide stop with a empty mag.
I was more concerned with doing any damage to the pistol by closing the slide with a empty mag. in the pistol.

I would ease the slide forward and not let it slam forward. If the slide is allowed to slam forward there is a slight chance the extractor can be bent.

Yep I ease it forward.
I was more concerned about causing issues with the slide lock or mag. My guess is that although it is more difficult to depress the slide lock with a empty mag in the pistol because of the follower pushing up on the slide lock. It won't cause any damage to the pistol, slide lock or empty mag. as long as you close the slide gently.
Is this a correct assumption?

ALWAYS ease the slide forward on a 1911 if you're not loading it. The recoil spring is designed to strip a round out of the magazine as the slide goes forward, and all or the resistance that entails. Dropping the slide either without a magazine, or on an empty magazine can, over time, cause all sorts of damage.
Oh, 1911s do not have slide releases, they have slide STOPS.
