Kimber Ultra Carry Finish

A good friend of mine bought a Kimber Ultra Carry a few months ago and started using a Fobus paddle holster with it for training etc. The problem he has noticed is that the finish on the Kimber was coming off due to the holster rubbing against the gun. It seems to me the Kimber finish should be much more durable than this as it has not been in use for very long.

Is this typical for the Kimber finish to wear so easily? Or is it just the way it is with an "inexpensive" holster like the Fobus? After having to send the gun back to the factory for FTE & FTF problems, along with the poor finish durability, he is sorry he paid the price he did for the Kimber.

I love my Custom II, but I've noticed that the black finish on Kimber's low-end guns (Custom IIs, Ultra-carry, etc) isn't terribly durable. The spray-on finish on the controls is even worse.

I just picked up an Ultra carry that was used. There is some finishe wear on it but not too bad. I haven't had enough holster time with it to see how fast the finish wears. I a using an unlined leather holster.

If your friend uses a quality leather holster, the finish would wear off a lot slower than when using a kydex or nylon holster. Then again, your friend could pay to have ceracoated. That would bring his holster wear problem down to zilch.

same thing happen with my new Rock Island i had finish comming off my triggerguard using a Fobus holster, tell your firend to get a leather one.

I just finished putting my Ultra carry back together, I had mainly scratches on the frame but some blueing wear on the slide. I did some touch up blueing on the slide and baked a Gun-Kote finish on the frame. I'll see how well it holds up with some holster time.

I also added an extended mag well and a new Wilson combat mag. She looks almost new again. Next thing will be new grips and an ambi safety lever then myabe some night sights.
