I just got my self a used kimber ultra carry II from the local shop. When i brought it home i realized the bottom of the feedramp had been slightly damaged. It looks as if someone was cleaning the slide lock area in the frame and accidently lost balance and drove whatever he/she was using into the feed ramp causing the scratch. Can this make the pistol jam at all? If it does i want to get a refund. I do want to keep it though i got it at a real good price. (When i load up the gun it seems the bullet rides on the upper part of the feedramp.) This is a sweet gun.

Take it out to the range and shoot it to see how it operates. No need to worry about it before then. I really doubt the scratch will interfer with the operation of the pistol.

If the scratch really bothers you then take it to a gunsmith and have the ramp polished (do not try this at home unless you already have experience).

But I would still go to the range first before doing anything.

Pretty common with aluminum frames. These scratches are either caused by 8-round (short) mag followers rocking into the feed ramp and dinging it, or the sharp edges on hollow point ammo. This thread in the 'Gunsmithing' forum talks all about the issue and it's potential resolutions.

The scratches can get bad enough to impact feeding, but it takes a lot. I minimize this problem with my alloy frame 1911's by using round-top Metalform mag followers, and by using hardball for much of my practice shooting.

I dont have any pictures. I dont have a digital camera. Plus i have no idea how to post pictures on forums. If i can get the pictures up i will.

I opened up the gun and inserted a magazine in it. You cant see the cut in the frame when the magazine is fed. The cut is at the way bottom so im thinking there wont be a problem. I cycled it dozens of times and it fuctioned fine. What do ya think? But yup i am gonna hit the range havent been to one for a while.

Ultra Carry Feedramp

Just go shoot it sir. Your Ultra Carry should be fine. My Ultra Carry CDP has a pretty dinged-up feedramp from magazine followers as rbernie described. However, it shoots perfect. Just don't use the split metal magazine followers, again, as rbernie described above.

Best regards.

Hi Dumper,

Never "polish" an aluminum feed ramp unless you want to remove its protective finish, i.e. its anodizing!

Have a look on this forum re "damaged feed ramp". I think you'll enrich your knowledge a bit... but maybe more than you want!:D

alumltd has a point about polishing the feed ramp. When I recommended getting the ramp polished, I was thinking the ramp was part of the barrel like Springfield Armory and Para Ordnance does with their aluminum framed 1911s.

It not occur to me that your Kimber may have a standard 1911 barrel and ramp set up. If this is the case then no, you do not want mess with the ramp since it would be anodized.

Sorry for the bad info.

My Kimber Combat Carry (a Series I gun that is the predecessor to the Compact CDP) was a used gun purchase with who knows how many rounds through it. It's feed ramp had plenty of dings and very small gouges. No problems feeding (so far) with Corbon 165 grain +P JHP's (very sharp edged rounds) or Remington 230 grain JHP's.

I will try some Winchester 230 grain SXT JHP's; I don't expect there to be any feeding problems with those either.
