just shot one, in love. Was leaning towards a full size Les Baer, but now i think my 1911 purchase will be a Kimber Ultra or Pro Covert II....any owners with suggestions/advice?? which is the best Kimber in the 3-4 inch barrel department...?

I still need to save a few pesos, but i like to make up my mind in advance. :)

I have 4 Kimbers one Ultra & one Pro. Love them all so it's hard to pick a "best". Although I'd have to say my two favorite are my Ultra Raptor II & Raptor II.

If you will be using it to CCW then I'd go with a Ultra/Compact/Pro CDP II

I have a Kimber Ultra Carry II that I trust implicitly. Never a problem and it's very accurate.

Good choice.

"If you were thinking of going with a Les Baer, then switching to a Kimber... I'd urge you to reconsider. "

Let me clarify... :). I want a high end 1911. "maybe" smaller for CCW (i've got a compact M&P for everyday CCW, but would be nice to carry a 1911 at times too)

Yes, Les Baer is high end stuff, but part of it is....if i can take a giant leap up in quality from run of the mill 1911, and stay waaay under in price from a Les Baer.....i might do that...not sure. It's like buying a Ferrari when i can only drive a Porsche. Is the extra "umph" really worth it..?

+1 for the Ultra/Compact/Pro CDP II

The CDP is Kimber's premiere line of CC pistols. They come nicely equipped right out of the box. I have one in the Compact size and I love how well it shoots as well as how easy it is to conceal.

Thank goodness I finished that sip of coffee before I read the OP. To go from a Baer to a Kimber is like saying you broke up with the Prom Queen to go out with Miss Uni-brow.

I had the great fortune of selling my last Kimber. Not that it, like so many other Kimbers I had was a piece of junk, but rather it was the principle of the matter. I have made sufficient posts regarding my experience with Kimber that I need not repeat it.

Consider alternate sources of 1911. Baer, Colt, Springfield (listed in alpha order). Avoid overly short 1911s. They tend to be unreliable. Be safe out there and carry a reliable 1911.

Kimber makes fine weapons. If you've shot one and liked it then buy one. You will save serious money by buying one instead of a Les Baer.

For carry, I would prefer the Baer. But then, get what you can afford. Also, if you get the Kimber, put a few hundred rounds through it before you carry.

I have a CDP pro, a tactical Pro, and a tactical custom. I had a custom II that I sold on here a while back. These pistols were all purchased in the last 18 months. All 4 of these pistols were perfect out of the box and never had a single problem. The CDP Pro is the one that I carry with out hesitation.

Good thing I wasn't drinking anything when I read you coment or I would probably drowned on it.

I had a Ultra CDP Pre II. If I was to go back to a Kimber it would be a Pro madel and wouldn't be an alloy frame.

But If I wanted a smaller 1911 I would go with a Les Baer Stinger or a Tunder Ranch Commanche Spc.

I now have a full size Les baer TRS and wouldn't give it up for any 2 Kimbers. Don't get me wrong I like the Kimber but it's not in the same leauge.

I would save my ducketts for an extra payday or 3 and get the baer

Ahhh, now I see. There is no need for a Ford, Chevy, Toyota, VW, etc. since everyone can now get a BMW.

I have two CDPII in pro size and an Ultra Carry II LG. One of the CDPII was used and has a hiccup returning to full battery now and then, but the other two (purchased new) have had no problems. I carry the Ultra more, just because it's a little smaller and it hides better/easier, but I wouldn't have a problem with either one.

Pat-inCO:

That's seriously funny. :) My point is the extreme difference in price range. Now, admittedly, the OP didn't propose dropping the Prom Queen for the local bag-lady of 1911A1s, but I think you get the point.

In my experience, dollar amount expended has not netted equal quality or equal reliability. My most expensive 1911A1 cost me approximately $2,000.00 for a Custom Shop model, and it was horrid. In another thread, I recently stated of my Colt collection, that while I do like my modern-era Colt 1911A1s, I wish I had known 3 years back what I know now. That knowledge then would have led me to purchase 1 or 2 low-round-count WWII era 1911A1s.

As I view 1911A1s, regardless of make or model, they serve two purposes: 1) to go bang every time the trigger is pulled, and 2) to impact within MO-BG at defensive ranges. All the same, firearms preference is much like selecting with whom one might like to date: some like blondes, some like brunettes and some like redheads. One credit I have to give Kimber, the company makes more models, sizes, etc, than any 1911A1 manufacturer of which I am familiar.

Anyone seen any low-round-count Remington-Rand or Colt 1911A1 at reasonable price lately? I might be interested. Then again, maybe the OP would like to see a picture of one too. It isn't about make or model...it's making informed decisions, which enable us to achieve the point of rationality: purchasing the most 1911A1 for the least amount of money.

JMHO.

He was already window shopping the BMW just has not got to test drive it. He did on the other hand get to test drive the Lincoln (Ford). Couldn't call it an all out ford had to go with there best.

Now if we knew where he was at somebody with a Baer, Wilson, ect could let him do a test run on them.

The only Kimber I currently own is a Stainless Ultra Carry, with the 3"
barrel and aluminum frame; weighting in at only 25 ozs. Its proven too be
100% reliable with all types of ammo; including all major brands of JHP's.
Oh yes, I also own a 5" Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special 1911. Now that
the MSRP is up too $1990 for the standard blued model; I prefer to carry
the $779 Kimber~! :scrutiny: ;) :)

If i do stick with Baer, I am fighting my strong desire to pick up the Custom HC .40 ....I know it's borderline sac-religious to not have your first Baer be a .45acp.....but dang it that .40 is gorgeous.

maybe i'll get the .40 AND the Custom Carry :) (and sleep on the couch for the rest of my life....

thanks to all for the info...I've got a lot to chew on, and another 2 months before i am ready to buy....

I have a Kimber eclipse that I bought used. It has been perfect in accuracy and function. I recently bought a new Stainless Pro Carry II(I said I would never buy new). It has also been perfect for the first 800 rounds. That is an aluminum frame 4" barrel. I couldn't be happier. Would I love a Baer, Wilson, or Brown? Absolutely. I wish I could have the best, but I do have the best that I can afford. You get what you need for your money. Whatever you end up getting, please post pics, we all like those:D

You can get a TRS for $1700 why would you pay MSRP for anything.

I purchased a Kimber Pro Carry II approximately 2 weeks ago and have shot 250 rounds through it and have a failure to feed rate of 25%. I am sending it back to Kimber to see if the problems can be fixed. But the problems are slide does close all the way after a shot, bullet sometimes stuck against the ramp and does not load and sometimes bullet is half way in the barrel and slide does not close at all. this happens 2 - 3 times in an 8 round mag. I've tried different mags and shared them with a Springfield 1911-A GI 45 which handles all with no problem and never has had a problem in over 500 rounds now.

True, but I think he's asking if Uni-brow will do things in bed the Prom Queen would never let you do to her...
