Knives in Inaccessible Packaging

I hate those things for all merchandise. they are a pain in the butt and if your not careful, they will cut you pretty bad. but generally, the nicer, better quality and higher priced knives are behind the counter in a box. the five dollar knife that I know is from a decent company that I will use just for opening tougher packaging during Christmas time ... now that knife I don't care to "feel" it because its not even worth the time to try and feel it. If you know it's a decent cheap knife what's the point. Now just before i bought my SOG SEAL pup knife I went into Cabela's yesterday and looked at it and handled it one last time. I was satisfied so I bought it online for a cheaper price. with shipping and handling it was less expensive then at Cabela's.

But no knife manufacturer is going to put a fifty dollar knife in some stupid packaging like that. those go behind the counter, and those are the ones that are worth looking at.

$50 Knife In Blister Pack

But no knife manufacturer is going to put a fifty dollar knife in some stupid packaging like that.

Well . . . maybe.

I visited Cabela's last week and saw several > $50 knives/tools in blister packs. Gerber, Buck, Kershaw, Leatherman.

Walmart has gradually changed all their knife counter displays to knife racks with blister packaging, including the $50+ knives.

Interestingly, the local Black Sheep sporting goods shoppe uses boxes for most of their good stuff, even the $25 Buck and Gerber pieces. They have plenty of imports hanging in blister packs on the racks, but the better brands are at the counter and in boxes, with examples under glass.

Even so, I've bought seven or eight knives at Black Sheep, all in blister packs, all at prices below $20, and all of them "imports," but -- in complete contradiction to normal expectations -- I've been more than pleased with all of them. Three Normark "American Hunter" branded folders (EKA, Sweden), two Normark folding fillet knives (EKA, Sweden), and three Imperial Barlows from Ireland. The Swedish-made hunting folders have become my favorites; despite my having some very nice Bucks and Kershaws costing two and three times as much.

So, while the "rule" is that I prefer boxes, some of my best pieces came in blister packs.

(I would imagine if I found a store that carried Mora knives, they'd be on the rack in blister packs, and I'd buy them like candy. Maybe it's just as well that nobody locally carries the Swedish/Norwegian/Finnish lines out on the racks.)

I was in WalMart the other day. they had a whole bunch of blister packed camp knives (the SS folders with a blade and a can opener, etc). $1 each. I was so tempted because they looked pretty decent but I really wanted to open one up first and play with it a bit, so even though it was only one dollar I passed.

Next time I am there if they are still available I may get one. Just for the heck of it.

I've bought them both ways. There are still some old hardware stores that have those knife display cases with actual knives inside them! Normally, that would be where I would look for a working knife. I peruse gun and knife shows for adding to my collection of coolness, and on a rare occasion, I'll buy a blister packed knife or set cause I either like the way it looks, or I'm going to gift it to someone OUT of the blister pack.

Butch.
