Gerber Covert thoughts

I handled one of the Mini Coverts with a 2.9" blade. Seemed like a decent knife, but made in China.

The full size seems to be USA made, but with about 4.5" blade is just a bit bigger than I want.

I was looking around online and found this.

The blade is a little under 4" and it is assisted opening. I've not actually had this size or version in my hand. Any thoughts on any of these knives, the last version in particular.

The reviews on the Mini Covert FAST aren't very complimentary.

OTOH the Manual 3.78" 154CM Covert looks good to go.

The Mini Covert Auto looks good as well.

The problem is that this knife is a defensive tool first and foremost and may not be legal to carry because of the dagger blade shape. It isn't a good EDC all-purpose knife, but Col. Applegate didn't intend it to be.

I had the big one for a while some years ago.
Sold it on eBay and recovered my losses.

As stated, it is just about worthless for an EDC knife.

It's a folding dagger, and not much good for anything else except opening mail with a Ninja flourish.

It was my EDC up until a few weeks ago. I now carry a Boker Subcom without the clip Monday thru Friday at the office and the Gerber Mini Covert other times. I had the Gerber about a year. It's a good knife for my uses - opening packages, boxes & even as a last ditch tool. I personally like the locking mechanism. Also, it is pointy sharp.

Hey, for a little over $30, if it doesn't pan out, it's little loss.

The manual opening covert is a fine knife, as is the full size Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn folder, and the rest of the US made Gerber A-F line like the autos. The foreign made members of the Gerber A-F line are, shall we say, less than stellar to be polite.

Alternatively, the Benchmade 530 Pardue Axis has a very similar overall profile, a 3.25" blade, cost about the same, and is even higher quality: http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/BM...medium=search-as-you-type&utm_campaign=pardue.

I carried one for several years, and found three problems for me. The covert model was a little two large and heavy foe every day pocket carry. Second I could not get or keep an edge on it. Third it's a weapon and you are going to have a hard time convincing anyone that it is not a weapon.

That's both a matter of opinion, and a question of how your state laws define a weapon. I find spear point blades to be dandy for cleaning finger nails, opening letters, and slitting tape on packages. Thankfully the state of Georgia says a knife isn't weapon unless the blade is over five inches, regardless of blade shape or edge (unless on a school campus where the definitions are changed).
