What needs do you have as far as a knife and which knife did you choose to fill it?

1. Defense. Emerson Karambit. I like the style and have more training hours and confidence with it and it just...feels...better than using a conventional blade. I have a folder only because in CA it is a felony to carry a concealed fixed blade and I don't like open carry.

2. Utility/Beater. Leatherman Wave. This is for everything except defense. Opening boxes, fixing computers, plucking nosehairs, clipping coupons, this sucker does it all. I have a Strider MFS for utility as well, but it's not very useful to me only because it's a fixed blade.

3. Dress knife. I'd really like a dress knife and have something like this...

but as of yet I don't have one.

My defensive knife choice would be my brain. Its sharp and the deadliest weapon that I have. :) Secondary would be my AFCK 806D2.

Utility choice is a 750. Its a liner lock and I've been carrying that knife around for years.

Dress would be something made by Eric Blair. Probably a Toxic Slaughter :)

Edit to add picture :)

I have a ton of knifes but the one that I carry and best suits my needs is a letherman micra, although I do have a supertool in my car. I am not by any means skilled in knife fighting and would like to avoid that type of confrantation if posible. I carry an asp baton.

I like heavy, large choppers for outdoor or defensive use.
This year, I've mostly used my Himalayan Imports Chitlangi for outdoor use. (I wrapped the handle in grip tape to kill the glare and help purchase while I was at Fort Lewis; this is an old pic.)
My HI 16.5" WW II is my favorite fighting knife: big enough to hit heavily, while being light enough to be manuverable. I also think highly of Dale Sandberg's Eight Dollar Mountain Foundry knives. No flash, just sturdy, hard working knives that keep an edge a long darn time.

I'm fond of the Benchmade Griptillian or Spyderco Native for EDC.

Defense- Benchmade 750 Pinnacle frame lock + Emerson/Perrin La Griffe. Sometimes, just sometimes, Benchmade 42 or a large fixed blade such as a Mark II or an F/S.

Utility- SAK Soldier or Leatherman Wave for EDC. Becker Necker for Outdoors. I hope to add an HI WWII model very soon as my heavy chopper.

Leatherman and Mini-Griptilian take care of my every-day needs.

When hunting or camping, a Randall #3. Although, even then, the Leatherman would get tapped for an awful lot.

I've thought of carrying a defensive knife, but need some skoolin' first.

Defensive knife. I'm still shopping for one that I like. I'm currently looking at something by either Al Polkowski, Bob Dozier or Bud Nealy. Right now I'm still using one of my BM 551's for this role.

Utility. That role is again currently being filled with a BM 551 (this sweet little blade fills many roles).

Beaterville. My SOG Seal 2000 is my thrasher. [I had to use it a few weeks ago to hack my truck out of some small alders that I slid into. (Muddin'! It does a Taco bad!) It works pretty good considering what I paid for it. It doesn't stay sharp very long, though.] I've got a Camillus/Becker BK-7 that is on its way. It will soon replace the SOG as my beater knife.

Survival. I still want to purchase a Strider, but the BK-7 may have to do for now. I also have a few Ka-bar's that would work in a pinch, I guess. Now that I think about it, I may buy a Camillus CQB-3 from www.1sks.com to throw on a strap of my bugout bag, too. Another neat knife that I'd like to have for the 'survival role' would be a SwampRat Camp Tramp.. so many knives, so little money! :banghead:

Dress knife? What's that?! :scrutiny: No, seriously, I plan on picking up a large Sebenza as a dress knife.. one of these days.

Not that heavily into knives really .. but here are a few .. there are many other el cheapo Chinese ones around too ... almost everywhere!!

At top is a recent aquisition ... a Buck Mayo, bought from a member here. This is a lovely knife and is now a constant companion ... it will serve me fine as a defensive if needed. ''Scary sharp'' is apt description.!

Below that is a Buckmasters ''hand out'' ... actually a Camillus and tho a rather unimpressive handle ... is actually a great blade. Often lives in my camo hunting gear.

Then third down is a cheapo ... but happens to be quite good for what it is.

Fourth, with the green handle ... a ''give away'' Chinese but ... that lives in pocket for everyday utility use - quite capable and easily sharpened.

Finally a ''White Hunter'' ... my knife of choice in the Boonies .... bought back in 1967 for about $50 ....... it has cut down small trees ... butchered a large amount of meat ... and been a great asset. Holds a superb edge and tho not a stabbing knife at all .. is very much a ''hacker'' ... all that weight in the tip, tho aesthetically a tad ugly ... makes for a great tool. The serrated back is great for bones too.

I always also have a ''Leatherman'' clone . not great quality but the pliers sure have come in handy!:)

Defensive folder: Spyderco Endura with plain edge. I just switched to this one from a Gerber EZ-Out, which I still have for backup. The Gerber is in no way lacking, but I much prefer the new Spyderco.

Utility: A Victorinox SAK. I think it is an old "sentry" model. I have had it since I was 14 (11 years) and I use it daily. You can still shave with it even after all I have put it through.

If my britches are on, those knives are on me.

Other knives I use often are:

1)Homemade Brussleto (blade made in Norway) "patch" knife. I carry it in my boot sometimes and I carry it in my pocket when I go hunting small game. It has an antler handle, a pewter "guard" and a leather sheath of the sigan dubh type. The blade is ~ 2 1/2" and is the finest carbon steel. Of all my small sheath knives, this is by far my favorite.

2)"Green River" knife with a sheath my late father made. This is just an old Green River type skinning knife, (which means SHARP!) my dad gave me when I was a 10 year old punk on my first hunting trip. The leather sheath is of the "mountain man" or "Indian" style that fits under the belt. It is decorated with brass tacks and three round "windows" with red wool behind. I have used it hard and it shows, but it is so simple and well made, I have no doubts that my grandchildren will get just as much use out of it as I have (will).

3)Rick Butz woodcarving knife. If you are a woodworker, I am sure you have heard of this one. If not, it is a great little GP carving knife. I use it all the time.

One of these days I'll break down and get a Becker knife of some sort to replace my Camillus "Ka-Bar" on my web gear. Not that the Camillus doesn't work...

...what was I just saying... Oh yhea, I need to get a Becker.

EDC: Gerber LST Jr. and a Leatherman Squirt P4. The Gerber is slated to be replaced with a Spyderco Native III. It's served me well over the past 5 years but I need to move to something a little more accessable.

Vehicle Knives: Gerber Multi-Tool (also used when fishing) and a Winchester 3.5" liner-lock folder that stays cliped to the seat belt mount on the left side of the drivers seat(I'm left handed). When I lived in Detroit I had, on more than one occasion, Panhandlers approach my vehicle.

Unzipping chores: For hunting I use a Bark River Woodland http://www.barkriverknifetool.com/professional/index.html

Camp knives: Becker K&T BK71, and a 16" Gerber/Fiskars hatchet.

Dress knife: Swiss Army Soldier.

My utility knife/edc, a Buck Creek Whittler:

Whittler.jpg

My dress fixed blade (and small game hunter), a Tomey Day Hiker (O1 tool steel, some burl, I can't recall which, mosaic pins, vine filework on spine):

My dress folder isn't pictured, but it's a Beverly (local maker) linerlock 2.5" blade, jeweled Ti liners, and giraffe bone scales.

Utility- I have one of the SAK lockblades. Never leave the house without it. Also have a couple Leatherman tools and a Swisstool that I have stashed here and there for convenient use.

Defense- usually a Spyderco Harpy. Once in a while, I go with a Spyderco Police model.

other- I have the remains of a once huge collection. Gave the rest away as gifts over the years since I stopped collecting. Have a few pretty nice and expensive pieces that almost never see the light of day and no use at all.

Handi tool; Officer's Model SAK or Leatherman Supertool.

Fingernails; a little stainless pen knife that will cut soda cans in half and still not need sharpening, up to 7 cans so far, also has a nice nail file.

Box cutting, small game; Old Timer 1840t, sngle blade liner lock carbon steel and razor sharp most of the time, except after cutting boxes.

SD; S&W HRT wo/serrations.

Fighting; Camillus Kbar look like but with civilian style stacked leather handle, Brass guard and pewter end cap.

Skinning; Unknown brand clip point that is sharp.

My beater/utility knife is this framelock I made. Its all 440C, all hardened. Looks kind of rough (not only have I abused it, I got lazy finishing it since I was keeping it)
Blade is right at 3 1/2" and its nice and slim to carry at 3/8" thick.

I am a huge Benchmade fan so for defense it is a BM 735.

Utility is an old Buck folder, and a Leatherman Wave (great tool).

I would love to have a Emerson Karambit, but still to pricey for me.

For a dress knife I carry this linerlock. Its another one I made, 3" O1 blade, aluminum bolsters and cocobolo scales. Filework on the blade and liners.

I don't have anything specifically for defense. I guess I should think about it more seriously instead of following the line of thought that anyone big enough to try attacking me is too big to outrun me ;)

There is a Benchmade 806D2 in my near future hopefully. Already have too many knives, but I'm kind of addicted and think the axis lock looks cool. Also want to try out some D2 and see if it might be something I'd like to use in my own knives.

mtnbkr - Nice Tomey. My daughter has a S.U.C. that Kathleen made for her (ok, so my 5 year old met Kathleen and liked the look of the S.U.C and Kathleen made one specially for her [my money, but somehow my little girl's knife:scrutiny: ]). She was injured and couldn't make knives for a while in '03, but I've been told that I have to get one of Kathleen's Thumbtacks as soon as possible.

I would love to have a Emerson Karambit, but still to pricey for me.

Emerson Karambit: $180.
Two days of training: $250.
Nicking yourself in the forearms, drawing blood and drilling your first aid skills because you were too cheap to buy a practice blade: priceless.

:D

My pocket knife is a Spyderco Delica stainless with a serrated edge. My other knife is a Spyderco Endura with a straight edge that I carry just in front of my holster. I'm looking to add a fixed blade knife somewhere.

I always have a Blue Delica with me. SwissChamp on my keychain. Ka-Bar or two in the car. Occasionally carry an Endura as backup to the Delica (go figure).
In a former life I had to wear a tuxedo a lot, and my 'dress knife' was a Spyderco 'Q'.

For areas where my CWP doesn't cover

such as church, "posted" businesses, etc., and as a back-up/weapon retention aid when packing a handgun:

Defense: Either a Spyderco Chinook, Spyderco Civilian, or a Cuda Maxx (if I ever have to use a blade for self defense :uhoh: I want a strong, sharp, capable blade. Folders are at least arguably "pocketknives" (I even carry the Maxx in a pocket!), while fixed blades are prohibited in many jurisdictions in my area.

Utility: While working in my office, I carry a Case Russlock with blue bone handles. It's so cute I rarely get any "that's a weapon!" comments, except in jest from my buddies. It does nicely for opening envelopes, cutting tape, and so forth. It's my favorite EDC as it was a present from my son.
