As anyone who trains with edged weapons knows, training blades that match your live blades can be difficult (if not impossible) to find. Here are a couple examples of what I've come up with to address that problem.

Not sure I understand what you mean, hso. Kydex is more flexible than steel, aluminum, or wood, and comparable to polypropylene. Depends on how many layers I use, of course, The Guardian (4 layers, excluding the handle) is quite a bit stiffer than the CRKT (2 layers).

Very cool! I'm a little concerned about thickness, whether these are thick enough for safe FoF training. In any case, I love the blade on the CRKT.

Too bad you're not closer to York Springs.

ETA: okay, I see the side-view on the Guardian is thick enough to use with a padded training sleeve.

I use rubber since the chance of training injuries from the trainer blade are almost completely removed. Steel, aluminum, wood and, now, kydex, represent too much of a risk for injury, although they are far more realistic in handling.

Ah, now I understand.

I take a different view. I like using wood (or micarta, or kydex) with eye protection, covered with a padded sleeve made of pvc insulation and duct tape.

You betcha. Especially when cold. I left this piece of scrap kydex in my not particularly cold shop fridge today.

One good bend and.....

I've heard that Kydex can become brittle when cold, but I've not been able to replicate the results of your experiment. I left pieces of various sizes and thickness in my freezer for a week, and none of them broke when bent double. I also store my Kydex in an unheated space year round, and I've never had a piece break, even during extended periods of below freezing temps during the winter.

Be carefull! Getting stuck in the eye with a plastic knife can blind you just about as easily as a real one. I attended a martial arts class once where people put on old T shirts and simulated knife fighting with magic markers. It ended when one individual went to the hospital with a puncture wound that required stitches. Another man received a perminant tattoo in the bend of his elbow. Twenty years later it is still visable.

Anyone that trains with knives that doesn't wear protective eyewear is foolish. I've had my safety glasses literally broken on my face in training.

I train FOF weekly (cane, knife, hands, etc) with an old, old oriental master and a few other geezers of varying disabilty. Dont use protective gear, you dont train, period.

Tad,

I was scared of the dang thing after we broke for lunch the first day!

I still think I see bruises and having my safety glasses smashed off my head left an indelible impression in my mind (and very nearly in my noggin)!
