L Frame question

ok, sent my older 586 back in to Smith for the L frame modification (pre dash 586)

got it back in about a week and a half, very pleased. looks like they tried to stamp an "M" over the serial number but its pretty ugly (my 586 has a finish called Melonite aparantly and its pretty durable)

anyhow, how do i REALLY know they did the mod? i'd love to carry this revolver, and the paperwork says they replaced the hammer nose and bushing - but call me paranoid.

how do i know they did? these failures seemed to really lock the L frames up completely, and I really want to make sure it doesnt do that. should it look any different?

Not if they did it right. If the old nose had a lot of rubbing, it might have looked "polished" compared to a new firing pin. I rather doubt they are trying to fool you.

I guess you could shoot it and find out if it works.
If it extrudes primers back through the firing pin bushing, you will know it.

Did you get the Mellonite applied? I have not heard of S&W offering it.

i really doubt they are trying to fool me either fellas, I just see too much crap get through QC some days (and mechanics signing off of items that havent been checked over etc) makes me paranoid some fella just stamped a M on my pistola and let it out the door.

but it is doubtful. and the pin looks new, so i would assume it is. (no wear on it at all - and theres still oil on it now that i look closely)

i bought the 586 from a fella who said the finish was Melonite. I have never seen another pistol with a finish like this, but it does seem pretty durable. for lack of a better description it looks a bit like sparkelly parkerizing. (it has an almost crystalized appearance) i like it though

i'll post a picture of it one of these days after i get my new grips.

Do you really believe a company like S&W would stamp the "M" and not do the job??

Unless I watched them do the work there is always a chance. Could have accidentally been dropped in the Out box instead of the In box at the wrong time. If the work was done start to finish by one guy the chances are lessened but I don't know if that's how S&W runs their shop.

I trust no one to do the job right. That's why, whenever possible, I do all my own work on my house, cars, and especially, my motorcycle and guns.

I believe it is the one in the recoil shield (the frame area behind the cylinder) wher the firing pin goes through to strike the primer.
