LaPierre VS. Helmke on MSNBC Hardball NOW

Man, Helmke had a lot of good quotes: "The [militia argument] is past history."

Yes, if I were Helmke, I would drop the militia argument like a hot rock now. Because the last thing you want from a gun control perspective is a link between a militia (military weapons) and an individual right.

If the Brady's have an ounce of sense (foregone conclusion there), they will embrace the common use test and never mention the militia again.

NOW THEREFORE, In the interest of brotherly love, peace, friendship, self-promotion, political grandstanding, and all that, I TALIV, Prince and Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St Adrian of Nicomedia, Patron saint of Arms Dealers, of Cookeville, of Algood and of Baxter, Most Humble Guardian of the Poor of Jesus Christ, Do hereby Proclaim:

Helmke should fill up his ipod with Bjork and Tori Amos or something, go away for a couple years and just try to forget about all this gun business

Paul Helmke was the dumbest man in Indiana politics. I am very happy he is with the Bradys now.:)

Militia is past history? Ummm, no, it's not. If a weapon is in common use in the military, it is protected.

Get it, Paul. The common use test is even worse for you than Miller's military relationship test. Military small arms and weapons used in self-defense in common use are given absolute scrutiny to keep and bear.

Matthews interrupted too much as usual, but the ending was priceless (paraphrased):

Matthews: Special thanks to our guests, Wayne LaPierre, one of the best! And Paul Helmke...(awkward pause)....you were a little soft tonight, Paul...

I listen to Matthews, but he was starting to get under my skin with his silly comments to LaPierre; "are you ready to stop looking for the black helicopters?" or "does this mean you can walk down Times Square with a bazooka?"

He needs to get a clue.

I don't know, I think the second comment regarding the bazooka is a fair question. My guess is that many, many Americans read yesterday's news accounts of the Heller decision and have had similar questions. We have to remember that a vast majority of Americans have very little knowledge of Second Amendment issues.

Ah, but they see an opening. If "militia" is de-coupled, then there is no argument against banning "military-style assault weapons" if hunting rifles, shotguns, and handguns are allowed for defense in the home. This ain't over by a long shot. (no pun intended)

Here it is...

It is under, "SCOTUS strikes down gun ban."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036697

If this doesn't work, just go to the Hardball site. It is there.

I thought he asked good questions for each side, with a bit of bravado to make a point ala the "Bazooka" question. Basically, he was asking, "Are there limits to the type of weapons?"

He also asked relevant questions about keeping firearms in the home AND carry outside the home. He asked about a "single mother" walking home from work at night and her right to carry. Good IV IMO.

Even had the dem candidate's stmts re. "guns and religion."

Thanks so much for the link. I think LaPierre creamed Helmke. Helmke was also straddling the issue, saying that he was for the D.C. band and then saying that the Brady Campaign does not advocate gun bans.

I can't believe that no one here either picked up on or posted the fact that Helmke actually stated right to carry has NOT been a source of any problem!!! I wonder if this was a slip of the tongue or if he has just totally lost his marbles following Heller.

To be honest I thought Helmke came off fine and gracious for someone who lost badly. I don’t agree with him on his positions, but he is right in that on a Federal level the extremes have been neutered there will not be a slippery slope for a ban(right to use guns for SD in the home) and people can’t have rocket launchers (right to common use weapons). There is room for more clarification, such as what is common, but his statement seems correct.
LaPierre could have done better to acknowledge this new reality and better articulate his point that incorporation needs to be done to bring the Fed law to the state level. That the NRA will fight to make sure reasonable restrictions are actually reasonable and not like the ones in Chicago and NYC. It will be a long slog but I think we will win the day.

I love that video. Even with Matthews trying to make LaPierre look like a loon I loved watching Helmke get his a** handed to him.

How come the left say militias are antiquated and of no use, but they are kicking our butt in Iraq?

Notice that there is almost NO media coverage in Iraq anymore? That's because we kicked thier butt!!! It's all but over, our soldiers are bored, we won, hence the news blackout.

Good job guys and gals. Darn good job. :)

Or there could be a news blackout because we're losing with no end in sight. I mean, the media has more important things to talk about, like Lohan's underwear or the skateboarding dog.

This could have been a very good interview, but as Bostekrisco pointed out, Mathews seems to prefer the sound of his own voice over actual substantive debate.

<edit> And that was funny, Robert. Who knew rednecks had a sense of humor?

Matthews is an ass.

I think this debate would have been much better if he had kept his mouth shut and let the two guests do some talking. He kept asking questions, then interupting these guys mid-sentence.
