In Wake of Va. Tech Tragedy, Smart Gun Control - Not The Phony Kind!
April 18th 2007

There will be renewed calls for gun control in the aftermath of the slaughter at Virginia Tech. It is good thing to talk about, but the national debate always ignores a shocking reality. That is simply the fact that single-shot handguns are not as deadly as automatic weapons, and the fact that the killer at Va. Tech would have never killed as many people with a single-shot weapon. He would have been subdued.
Another fact: The Constitution allows the right to bear arms, but it doesn’t specify that people should be allowed to purchase automatic or semi-automatic weapons that can allow one person to murder so many people.

So it is time for the President and the Congress and the people to stand up for a different form of gun control - a total ban on the individual purchase of automatic weapons — a total ban. Exceptions of course would include those in law enforcement and the military.

Such a ban would satisfy the need for gun control, while at the same time allowing qualified people to buy regular hand guns, guns that protect.

If the President wants to comfort the victim’s families, and fight crime, he should make sure that people cannot buy automatic weapons of any kind.

This will cut down our disgusting murder rate and at the same time allow citizens to purchase the firearms they think they need for protection.

This is gun control with wisdom.

These recent acts of violence, capped by the mass murder at Va. Tech, require political courage and a deep respect for life.

This is a pro-life program to keep our people safe.

No automatic weapons in the hands of individuals will make this a safer country.

Someone should tell this dork that there has been a ban on AUTOMATIC guns since 1986. The VT Killer used a SEMI-automatic. That said, how would a revolver figure into his line of thinking? It doesn't qualify as a semi, nor a single-shot. Proof that the insane are taking over the asylum...

Not true. There is a prohibition on registering newly made automatic weapons but the ones on the register prior to 1986 can be legally bought and sold.

How embarssing. I can't read this without feeling embarassed for the poor guy. Apparently he thinks that regular handguns are single shot, and the VA tech killer's guns were automatic. And that people can just go out and buy automatic weapons.

People could go out and buy automatic weapons, in the previous century. And two centuries before that, ordinary handguns were usually single shot. The man is preaching what he calls wisdom, without having the slightest clue about the subject matter.

What the H is a "regular" handgun???

Operative word: think

Thats right, they just THINK they need them... Thanks for the condescending paternalism!

This is gun control without a brain

I'm not sure I follow you. One could go out and buy one this week if one was so inclined. Sure, there's some paperwork and it would cost quite a bit, but it's not like it is impossible. Hell, ask any Class III dealer and they will tell you just how easy it is.

OK, a little off topic, but just how easy are we talking? I've always been told there are quite a few hoops that one must jump through, including a ton of fees, and a pretty thorough FBI background check. On top of that, I've been told that even if you're clean as a whistle and able to pay all of the fees, that local law enforcement in your area must OK with it as well, otherwise it's a no go. Any truth to that?

Yeah, let's keep our soldiers from using automatic weapons so the Chinese can better defeat us.

Obviously the writer is from the mind-over-matter school. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. In Mr Kane's case, the lack of accurate nomenclature and for that matter 'facts' are irrelevant (or irreverant, as the case may be).

He must be refering to single shot handguns. Problem with that is that the criminal will not obey that law and the victim will be horribly outgunned.

Apparently this guy believes that one shot will never miss and stop the criminal everytime.

Moron

The VT massacre happened in a place where ALL guns were prohibited.

This is what passes for reason and logic?

Idiot.

Who is Larry Kane and why should we care?

I do love it when people say "It is a fact that" followed by something that is completely nonsense. Always makes me chuckle.

Not impossible, but what I meant by "go out and buy" was, go to the dealer, pay for it, and bring it home. Where I am is fairly gun-friendly, as places go, but you still need some degree of social connectedness to get permission from law enforement to transfer an automatic weapon.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me what a "normal" handgun is??? I just want to know which of mine are abnormal, so I can get rid of them before they sneak up and shoot me in my sleep!!!

:D

No, NeoSpud, your guns are just fine. I got some pretty good vibes from the gun-ether as all guns are on the same wavelength, you see.

Now, to the article. Let me see if I got this right: the author says that single-shot guns are less deadly than semi-automatics. Cho killed lots of people because he had a semi-auto and if Cho had had a single-shot, he would have been stopped. So, therefore, logically, all automatic weapons should be banned.

Right. Got it now.

The Constitution allows the right to bear arms, but it doesn’t specify that people should be allowed to purchase automatic or semi-automatic weapons that can allow one person to murder so many people.

it doesn't specify they CAN'T buy whatever weapons they want either . Unconstitutional gun laws prohibit the purchase of buying certain guns. Guys like this would have a tizzy if gov started making laws that would prevent them from spouting off like they do and the first thing they would do is point at the constitution saying they have the "right" .

whatever :barf:

No one here should be surprised at the lack of facts by the author. The antigunners are ALWAYS short on fact and BIG on fiction and fantasy.:)
