I just saw the thread about O'Reilly's so-called thoughts on so-called 'assault weapons.' Sorry if this is too similar ---

Larry Pratt of GOA was on O'Reilly last night to talk about Dean's reversals on gun issues. O'Reilly got on his soap box about evil black guns (clearly he is ignorant on this issue), and Pratt just sat there and let him rant. Bill was mouthing a lot of the nonsensical rhetoric from the left -- no one 'needs' assault rifles, the 2nd Amendment is for hunting and self-defense, most Americans support the ban (as if that makes it right), and if you don't support it you're on the fringe (funny, the AWB just squeaked by in Congress with the avid support of Clinton, and the GOP House voted it down in 1996 -- if opposing the AWB is on the fringe, then I guess a lot of Congressmen are on the fringe too).

I've been through media training and I've had the kleig lights on me and a microphone stuck in my face. I bombed. I don't think well under that kind of pressure, so I doubt I could do well on O'Reilly, but if Pratt is such a pussy cat, he shouldn't be doing these shows. We need a strong personality up there shoving O'Reilly's idiocy up his tail pipe, politely, of course :D .

I saw it and don't agree with you assessment.

The purpose of his guesting on the show was to discuss Dean's flip flop on gn control.

The Big "O" talked about assault weapons and Dean's flip flop as "heavy duty." I took O's comments to mean the flip flop over assault weapons was a heavy duty flip flop.

observations

Pratt acted honorably by sticking to the reason for his appearance. To talk about Dean's changes. He could have done like other guests and come in with a list of talking points which would be made regardless of the question asked. O would not put up with it.

Yes O is a pompous ignoramus about a lot of subjects. Yes he does believe access to a mike constitutes knowledge of a subject. No, it won't change any time soon.

Pratt did the honorable thing in ignoring the AW comments and thereby avoided dragging the conversation in a direction O would not have tolerated. Now Pratt has a chit he can use to educate O over his ignorance over AW's.

The only suggestion I can hazard is when O set up a question with his "heavy duty" comment about AW's, Pratt could have said something like "Mr. O, there is alot to the AW's that you are obviously ignorant of." Then proceeded to answer the question, not the set up. As it stands now, Pratt commends himself as a dignified guest that has built his credibility as a future source for background info WHEN THE AW ISSUE COMES TO THE FORE. AW's are a big issue on THR, but its time has yet to arrive for general discussion.

I didn't mean that Pratt should be rude; I know O'Reilly will pull the plug on you if you get over the top.

But sheesh, the guy just sat there when O'Reilly was talking about bazookas and machine guns! Hello, Larry? Anyone there? You might have pointed out O'Reilly was talking apples and oranges and that machine guns have been banned since the 1st FDR administration.

I've seen Larry Pratt in action against the Brady Bunch...

And he pretty much handed them their buttocks, roasted on a stick.

He consistently does better than Wayne LaPierre in such things, so I suspect the cases is either as Waitone mentions, or he's had an off day.

I have to admit I was a bit peeved when O'Reilly referred to the AWB as a law against machine guns and bazookas, and nobody spoke up... far too many viewers will accept these rantings as gospel when they're discussing it next, and these kind of opportunity's can't be allowed to pass with this kind of misinformation.
