Hello all,
I am in the midst of building an AR for my wife and she wants some pink accents. So I want to do some of those accents and one of the DIY kits from Lauer:

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/19...-spray-firearm-finishing-kit-matte-black-4-oz

I'm wondering if these DIY kits are worth it or if I am gonna damage what's supposed to be something special for her. It's not the cost of materials so much as messing up her Purty Rifle. Also at some point in the future I might do some duracoating on mine so this kit is interesting to me since I don't want to get a full air brush and compressor set-up since I won't do much duracoating besides these.

I've been fixing up a surplus FEG Hi-power and am going to try the Shake 'N Spray kit in black over the current parkerized finish.

I have not used Shake 'N Spray before, but have used Durabake from the aerosol can and was very pleased with the results. The key with the Durabake was to DEGREASE, go slow, keep the spray nozzle clean, start the spray away from the gun so you don't get any droplets on it (I just aimed at the tarp I was using as a shield until the sprayer "figured itself out"), and use very light coats.

I am hopeful that the Shake 'N Spray looks as good and holds up as well as the Durabake spray.

My extreamly acurate stevens rifles are definately the ugliest guns made.:barf:

They are now quite good looking with a simple krylon camo job, transfer ivy decals and clear coat in matt finish.:D

very cheap and has lasted 5 hunting seasons with very little scuffing.

They work good. I bought one a few years ago. I was unsure about Duracoat and did not want to spend a fortune in something I might not like. Anyway, long story short, I ended up buying a dedicated airbrush and other equipment after seeing how good the Shake'n'Spray kit worked. Just follow the instructions to the T.

I've used the durabake quite a few times, matter of fact I'm using it in the oven as I type this, and it works very very well

I showed my wife the pink furniture, but she doesn't like this shade of pink, she wants a darker shade and not that much of it, just accents. If it was as easy as putting furniture on it, that would be a blessing. Lol.

The shake and spray kits are fine, and perfect for single projects. Just follow the directions exactly, and you'll be fine. Just know that it is *very* easy to get runs in the paint, so be very careful when applying.

Also be sure to not handle the parts until they are fully cured. This means the parts need to set for a full week before any final assembly/use.

This gun was sprayed in the matte-black spray kit from the link above. I know the lighting isn't the best, but it is the best I had...

Well hmmm. I wonder if that stuff will work on a Ruger GP-100.

Make the shiny stainless go away and good old black.

How durable is it?

You can get a HVLP sprayer set from Harbor Freight for less than $50. Air compressors are a lot less than they used to be, and you find they are handy to have around. Just sayin'.

Another advantage is that you are more able to mix reducer and try different ratios to see what works with different colors.
