LC Smith Double

Gonna be a sweet shotgun! My Damascus 12ga is past the shooting point. Its barrels are considered unsafe. Plus I dont have a stock! Its Belgian IIRC.

I’ve only handled one LC double... Some rotten, no-good skunk had sawed it down into an armed robbery special and also had sawn a beautiful piece of wood into a crude pistol grip...

At least I had the pleasure of taking the guy who had it down to the local slam... The LC after the trial had to be destroyed. All my life I’ve heard that L.C. Smith shotguns were very well made and always worth a look. Just my luck that the only one I ever came across was being held by a lowlife...

I love the old doubles. I am fortunate to have several old Parkers, LC Smiths and a AH Fox. I have bloodied most of them on Pheasants and dove. I feel like I should be wearing a suit and tie when I take them to the field.

Lemaymiami,

Up in Tallahassee in the 1970's and early '80's the Florida Fish and Game folks were still obeying the then Florida law that those seized firearms not usable by Law Enforcement be sold at public auction. They would put whatever they got out on tables in the HQ building caticornered to the Capital and folks would make sealed bits on individual pieces. They said it was the buyers responsibility to follow federal and there fore state laws about barrel length and over all length and in the case of what made me ask the fixed suppressor on a pocher's .22 rifle! Nice conversation with their "armorer" about that one.

Anyhow as usually happens with such things folks bid way to high for basically junk.

Several of the Sheriff departments north of Orlando would simply pile everything together and allow folks to bid on the pile. Want that Artillery Luger and that Un blemished LC Smith ? Got to bid on the pile or RG .22 short revolvers and rattletrap .32 top breaks.

I thought it not worth the effort to buy a pile of crap in hopes of getting a few gems.

Sometimes bad guy guns are scary, oh not because they are black and high capacity, but because of things like that LC Smith. I looked at some seized sawn off single shots that had long bolt type stock retentions where the saw weilder had cut the bolt back some then threeded the nut on to hold his snubbed grip of a stock on....with the nut and half an inch of bolt out the back of the wood! Barrel on these jewels ( saw several) averaged about eight inches. I have seen a Mauser 98 cut down to just a bit longer barrel than the cartridge and a pistol grip.... and it was a straight bolt handle model. A few clip fed .22 rifles cut down to maybe a 4 inch barrel and a pistol grip.

I think it great that Tinker is saving this old lady and putting her back in the harness!

Giddy Up, Elsie!

An LC Smith shotgun is very high on my list. Before I started bidding on my most recent purchase on Gunbroker, I had no fewer than 20 shotguns “watched” and all were a bit above my pay grade, and way too nice to get my attention. I love the old workhorses, and don’t particularly care for the safe queens.

OP, very very well done sir. I am jealous. Don’t let anybody tell to you that loading plastic shells with black powder doesn’t work. It does, and it’s all that I shoot in my single shot 16.

I must admit I was going to mess with you guys sometime back. Not long after I got my LC Smith I ran across a Broke Guns ad for a set of 12 gauge barrels for the same with a dent for a very low price. They looked awful and were dented so I seriously considered getting them and sawing them off to barely legal and cold bluing the barrels and fibbing to you guys about sawing off great Grandpa C's LC.

then I was going to sit back and watch the online cussing for three days....post the gun with the original barrels and claim to have silver sodered the cut off bits back on for another three days of fun and finally show the gun with both sets of barrels.

except for the Fatwah you guys would have issued, with earthly rewards, after the first posting it would have been a scream!

Given the various changes and all the hand fitting that went into LC Smiths I determined it might be a PITA to actually do and we were all saved.

Nice to see an old classic being put back in service. I have a Damascus barreled H. Pieper hammer double that I found several years ago that I really enjoy. It was in good shape when I got it. Other than repairing a broken firing pin on the right barrel all it needed was a good cleaning. I shoot all brass shells in it loaded with 2 3/4 Drams of Pyrodex RS and an equal load of #4 shot. Very mild recoil and a decent pattern. Works great on Squirrels, they don't seem to notice it's an an outdated old gun and load

remind me to never play poker with this guy LOL

" I made a tapered dowel and used it to measure the wall-thickness of the bores" *** are you talking about ? You better get that gun to a DOUBLE GUN GUNSMITH and have the inside dia checked with a bore gauge. If you like your face and fingers. I have been shooting vintage doubles for over 20 yrs. You can email me at [email protected] tell me what part or the country you live in( USA of course ) maybe I can help you out with someone.

Whole project is on hold for the moment because we may be moving soon. When we land I'll be looking at this project again, and may be in a very different part of the country than I am now, so that will be the time to start looking. I very much appreciate the offer- it isn't easy to find someone that really knows old doubles.
