LC Smith firing pins

I would imagine someone very wisely took the firing pins out to disable the old gun due to safety concerns with smokeless powder loads and those old Damascus barrels.

Might be prudent to follow their lead and leave it disabled.

These are pretty straight forward pins and mostly just turned out by the local Smith.

Heed RC's advise regarding shooting these old guns. It's OK to hjave them complete but that doesn't mean they are shootable.

Also doesn't mean they aren't - only a COMPETENT smith who knows these old guns can make that determination.

There are plenty of folks who enjoy these old guns - after they have been given the OK and use them for fun hunting

After finding a competent 'smith who knows doubles, not your local scope mounter and barrel crowning guy, and given a the go ahead, enjoy that old Elsie.

You can buy 10ga ammo (expensive) of the correct pressures to shoot in that gun or (better IMO) load your own.

I have been shooting damascus guns with smokeless and blackpowder for over a decade now. As part of a reloading group that formed (and now defunct) at the old gunshop.com (now www.doublegunshop.com ) website I have data that uses smokeless powders that produce lower pressure than blackpowder. This was confirmed by Tom Armbrust's pressure gun.

Any time you see a blanket statement about the use of damascus barreled guns, dig deeper, there is probably more/better information available.

I even had a damascus barreled double rifle for a few years. :)

bgc,

I have some brass shells that I had made by Ballard Rifle when I purchased my first 10ga. I believe they are now out of business. For all of my smokeless loads I use cut down Federal plastic hulls and the SP10 wad.

I do not believe I have ever used any paper hulls. I am not sure anyone makes them anymore.

Thanks for the info Utah Shotgunner. I have been leaning toward the federal hulls as they are the least problematic. Do you use/can you use the regular shotgun wads or do you get the separate fiber wads?
