Always looking for cheap sources for lead and thought about using lead wheel weights. Is there a problem with using this type of lead for maxi-ball or minie bullet casting? I was told that because there is some tin in with the lead that they should not be used, is this true?

What harm is there with the alloy? Does it make it too hard? Thanks for any help.

Wheel-weight lead is too hard for most BP bullets/balls. As close to pure lead as possible is best. In Minies, a bit harder is acceptable. I'm told the base edges being square and sharp is important. Anyone else on the Minies? I've only done balls, myself.

Wheelweights are too hard, as the poster above mentioned. Proper alloy for BP is pure lead with 1% or so tin, the tin just makes the bullets fill the mold better and a little more cosmetically pleasing.
