I'm at that age where I'm wearing magnified cheaters to see things up close like reading, tearing down a gun or tying a hook. A while back a few of us decided to do some thousand yard shooting. We started at 100 yards to get grouped up then start pushing back 100 yards at a time. At the lowly 200 mark we all noticed we could not see our hits on paper through our scopes, but we saw them fine with the spotting scope. By accident I looked through my scope while I was wearing my cheaters and the difference was night and day. Not only could I see my hits, but I could read the print on the target. I told my buddies about it and they put on their up close glasses with the same result. It dawned on us that WE were not looking 200 yards down range- the scope was. We were only looking a few inches in front of us. We are old geezers with lots of shooting time. If you are in the same shape as we are, I urge you to get a pair of Dollar Store specs and see for yourself. Why have I never heard of this before ? Safe shooting

I'm sure an optical expert could add a lot to this discussion.

I wonder if other shooters who do not need the readers could also benefit from this.

Yep. el-cheapo readers (a pair in every room and tinted for shooting) coupled with clear plastic safety "glasses" from Lowe's. Has worked for several years now. My strictly vision-related problem is I'm nearsighted in my left eye and farsighted in my right eye. And I'm right eye dominant.

My Ophthalmologist tells me he has an even better solution for a few years down the road. Cataracts brought on by advancing age is going to force lens replacements. I get to pick the focal lengths I want: both eyes pistol sight distance, both far vision or one of each which I already have to some extent. As a shooter himself, he made a lot of sense.

I think I'm going to opt for far vision in both eyes and readers for shooting ... and reading of course. But at $4.50 for them delivered to my door it seems like a continuing solution.

Interesting... I'm near sighted, very, very, nearsighted, and since I'm looking at picture on the lens of the scope, I can actually see through a scope without contacts or glasses. I don't actually do that since I always wear contacts, not glasses, out of the house, but it's an interesting thing to discover.

Why not just go to an eye doctor and get yours examined and the exact prescription you need?

I really appreciate this post right now. I have excellent distance vision but need cheaters for close up to reading distance. I'll be experimenting with my readers and rifle scopes.
I buy safety glasses both clear and tinted with bifocal inserts at the local welding supply.

I use my older/weaker cheaters for shooting with the open sights on my muzzleloaders and an old 94 Winchester. I just wear the diopter that works best for whichever rifle's sight configuration.

Have noticed the same thing, as my distance vision is still quite good while my yardstick and closer vision is going south.

Started shooting handguns with my "readers" on a couple years ago & what an improvement.

This past fall ,a few others and I were comparing some different scopes, when I noticed the huge clarity advantage a "bubble wrap" 50 dollar scope had over both a Nikon "M" as well as my own VX2.

I'd happened to not think about still having the readers in place when looking through the Tasco.

That was an eye opener. After all- that ocular lens is only about three inches from our eyes.

This just made me realize how valuable the diopter adjustment is when looking through my Swarovski SLCs.

No readers needed.

I used to use full lens cheaters for pistol shooting since that was the only way I could see the sights (I'm 71). Of course the targets were pretty blurry. Then, I heard about Hydro-tacs and its significantly improved the shooting experience. Get them on Amazon for $14. They are small plastic bifocal lenses that you place on your shooting glasses where you want them. I cut mine to make it smaller and put a drop of water on the lens and press it on the upper section of the lens where I look when shooting a pistol. This lets me see my sights perfectly and keeps all my other vision normal for distance.

I have found that the "150" reading glasses do not help me with pistol. I'll bump up the strength.

When shooting my AR with scope I don't use glasses. The scope focuses fine.

My glasses and peeps on other rifles are fine. Don't know why.

Without glasses my vision isn't clear at any distance. Everything is a bit blurry...near to far. :fire:

Sure hate trying to shoot pistol with my vision now...but I still do. :D
