I took a friend to the range today with his first rifle (brand new shooter). He bought a Stevens 200 in .243 with an entry level scope. I spotted for him at 100 yards to help sight the scope in.

After sighting at 100 he decided to shoot one at 200 yards and proclaimed the scope wasn't sighted correctly. I felt like we had a pretty good zero, so I jumped behind the gun and squeezed one off at the same 200 yard target. I wish I had a picture of his face after seeing my shot!

Now I'm not here to proclaim how good of a shot I am, I was almost as surprised as he was! Needless to say he is now completely hooked. Felt good to introduce somebody to the sport in such a jaw dropping way.

One of those times when you casually say "I don't know; sure seems sighted in okay to me. Maybe a tad high but still, pretty close to where it should be."

Nice shooting!

Don't act surprised. Just walk away like it was the only possible outcome and say,"Don't worry, you'll get there." :D

Nice shot.

No it isn't a rare occurrence with me shooting MY rifles I know inside and out, it is with a gun I've never shot before!

I knew I did my part, so I looked down the spotting scope and told him "I left a little orange for you in the middle." He didn't get the rest of it, but he is determined to now. Another one has the bug, and it only gets worse. Before he knows it he'll have 40 guns and hopefully share the sport with somebody the way I did.

Did that a time or two knowing a good bit of luck played into it...like shooting the felt tip off a marker standing at 20 yards with a buckmark using cheap plinking ammo.

My fiancées first shot ever out of the first gun I ever put in her hands at 10 yards was almost exactly like that, Rossi model 68 .38spc, i lost it lol, good shooting man

That's why i walked away with no follow up shot, I knew the odds of replication were slim! Leave him thinking I really am that darn good (hahaha yea right).

That's pretty funny. I did something similar with a 45 cal. handgun one time...lol. You know, one of those, "I think this gun is messed up". One round, dead center in the X ring.

If that happened to me, I'd pack it up right there and then, drive home and drink a beer.

I believe you just reached the pinnacle of your shooting career.......

Come on bro. He could learn to shoot like that very often. Let's not limit the guy's shooting by convincing him he can't do any better. Maybe he could put 5 rounds into that same size bull at 500 yards some day. It can be done. Thinking you can do something is probably the biggest thing in shooting. The Russians did a ton of research into sports science and that's what they came up with when it comes to shooting. If you believe then you can. That certainly is a fine shot especially with a gun he isn't all that familiar with but there's no reason to believe he can't do that on a regular basis. Practice and being willing to learn will get you there if you let it. Well unless you have some disease or physical condition that prevents you from holding steady.

I'll admit I'm no sharp shooter, but I am comfortable behind a rifle. I've been training with a close friend who was a recon marine and he has taught me a great deal. I'm currently building a 30-06 savage 110 for 600 yard shooting and hopefully will improve my abilities.

That shot looks pretty good to me. You'd have to be mighty lucky for that to be all luck. Practice almost always pays off. The only time it doesn't is when you practice bad habits.

Good shot! My dad the same thing. My uncle finished hanging up targets and when we all stood up at the firing line my dad shot the box of tacks we were hanging the targets with. My uncle said he would have to pay for a new box unless my dad could shoot a single tack off the top of the saw horse we were pinning the targets on. So my dad stood about 45ft away and shot the tack clean off. This was no surprise to me seeing he regularly shoots two skeet with one shot and other cool stuff like that, but that's what you get when you've been shooting for 40+ years.

If he had asked you to do it again you could just put the shot off paper. When he asked where it went you just say "same hole". Try not to laugh.:)

Great shot.

My son and his friends were throwing clay pigeons out back a few years ago. I walked by and my son said, 'Hey, Dad...take a shot." I hadn't shot skeet in 40 years, but, well we're a very competitive family. I took one shot, the pigeon disappeared in a puff of black clay, and I handed back the shotgun and walked away.
Quit while you're ahead.:)

Thanks Cee Zee, just didn't want people to misunderstand this as a "look how great I am thread". The kid really is hooked after that which made my day.

I like the way you think royal! I'm not sure I could lead him on with a straight face though.

If you could land a whole magazine just off paper, as rapidly as the gun can shoot, and then keep a straight face and proclaim that they are all in the same hole, then you are golden.

This is exactly what my fiance did a couple weird so. Same thing first shot ever was out of a Walther PK380. Center punched the bullseye then proceeded to hit it a couple more times and all around it with my M&P Shield 9 and my buddies EAA Witness 9mm

I hit a clay pigeon the first time I ever shot any firearm. My uncle nearly had a heart attack. I shot it really quick after it was thrown and my dad started screaming at me about that. Between dad screaming and my uncle rolling on the ground screaming I thought for sure I must have shot my uncle. Seriously. :) He went on like that for 5 minutes easy and dad kept telling me to listen to him and not watch my uncle. It was crazy. They made sure I'd never forget it though.
