My .45 ACP reloads have not been feeding well through a Witness full size .45. Usually failure-to-feed, sometimes failure to extract. No problems at all with factory ammo. I'm using a Dillon Square Deal B w/ their proprietary dies. It seems the sizing die isn't doing a great job. Die marks on the case are not always symmetrical and some finished rounds are kind of "lumpy". Biggest problems are with some Winchester cases from a MAC 10 machine pistol, but not entirely limited to those. Shell plate is stable, dies seem to be in good shape.

Anyway, I've been reading about Lee Factory Crimp Dies on a couple of threads. Liking the sound of a second sizing, I picked one up. I ran my loads through it and noticed the lumpier cases had die marks where the lumps used to be. Took 'em to the range. A vast improvement. I still had a couple failures to feed, but that looks like a mag problem, rounds not fully back in the mag, or maybe OAL just a hair too large. 1% failure rate instead of 10%. Accuracy was consistant.

What am I overlooking? Obviously, I'd like to be loading fully functional ammo on the SDB. If this keeps up I may be loading fully functional ammo on a 550 using dies I own for a single stage press.

Phil ... I use the FCD's also . for most cals .. in fact for rifle I'd say they are invaluable.

Handgun ammo tho? Well they seem to certainly give (IMO) consistency and ... most important, with auto ammo where headspacing so important .. plus good concentricity of case mouth ... then they are to be recommended.

Sounds like you have all but cracked your problems ... but just those few that give probs. The feed failure .... was this a chambering problem . I am assuming so ... maybe they hung up coming off feed ramp and were ''catch ing'' on edge of chamber mouth? Were they stripping off mag column cleanly you reckon?

I know that some of my cases do get a significant ''ding'' from ejector and the way they exit .. usually resize, slight flair and crimp gets rid of that but on occasions, not sure if there is not a slight high spot remaining.

Beyond using the FCD ... hard to see what else you can usefully add .. other than perhaps reducing OAL just a hair. I do prefer to back off from anything like the full OAL.

Just thinkin out load here ... probably not much help.:)

I loaded 230 grain .45 Lead RN. Had a lot of problems. Bought that Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die. Problems solved.

Now I use that CFCD for all my handgun calibers, .45, .38, .44

SUCCESS!

Today, a friend and I discovered most of the reasons for failure-to-feeds:
1.OAL with SWC bullets needs to be at minimum. Otherwised the squared off point drags on the front of the mag. Causes a nose down condition, hangs up on the feed ramp.
2. The original equipment Tanfoglio mag is not as good as the after market Mecgar mags. The Mec mags have a little circular cut at the front. The Tan mag is about to get one, courtesy of Mr. Dremel Tool.
3. My crimp die was adjusted improperly. There was no crimp at all on my rounds. OOPS! So, FCD is not needed for this load!.
As always, thanks for your help.
Phil
