I'm using a Lee Classic Turret Press and I want to add automation to my powder drop for rifle rounds. I'm looking at the Lee Perfect Powder Measure along with the Universal Charging Die to make things a little easier.

Please, this questions are for those who use this setup, not for guessing.

Does this powder measure work well with a turret press?
Does it drop accurate charges?
Does it work well with most powders? (especially 4350 and 4895)

Anything else I should know about this setup??

Thank you...

Helpful Information

I don't believe it is made as a drop-in for your press with the standard kit from Lee Precision. You might call Lee customer service, they'll tell you more. When you install it, the case will operate the measure on the upstroke, but it doesn't return by itself on the down stroke. Several forum members have added a pull down spring to make it an automated step on a Classic Turret, but you'll have to search for those threads. The threads are recent and have pictures. I'm sure you'll find them.

The Perfect Powder Measure is a common drum-type measure. It works well on most powders, but larger granules get cut in half sometimes, and its plastic parts can be subject to static electricity when new. After you drop a thousand charges (or treat it with anti-stat and graphite) the static problem goes away and it measures 4350 and 4895 very nicely (although it still chops a few granules from time to time). Fine flake powders can drop a few flakes around the drum, but that doesn't hurt your ammo. It just peppers the bench top with a little bit of powder.

So the bottom line: It performs well enough. Look up the members who installed it on the Lee turret series to see how they hooked up the return linkage.

Thanks "Grizz" and "ants", good info for sure...

From the Lee Site: (I added the italic to highlight that part of the description)
Universal Charging Die
Automatically charges most cases. The die includes the connecting rod and adapters to actuate the measure with the case. The measure is positively reset for the next charge when the press ram is fully lowered. Also included are drop tubes for most rifle and pistol cartridges from the 380 ACP to the 300 Win. Magnum. This die does not expand the case neck.
ants,
I think the Universal Charging Die addresses the problem you're mentioning but I will look into it further before I buy anything. Thanks again!

If you want the automatic one, I think you have to go with the Auto Disk, or the Pro Auto Disk. I use the Pro Auto Disk and it works great. +/- .1 grains, and easy to use.

I already have the Pro Auto Disk along with the Double Disk Kit, the Micro Disk and the Adjustable Charge Bar. All work well but I was looking to add the "Perfect Powder Measure" for 1 step large rifle case charging.

Find the product at Midway USA's website. Customers have submitted dozens of reviews. That product seems to have many happy customers!

ArchAngelCD - that may be the ticket. If you use it, please post your findings. I'd like to know how it works for long rifle cases like 30-06 or similar.

You are right, the PPM is much prefered for large capacity rifle in my experience and opinion. Thanks, dude. Have fun with it.

FOLLOW UP:

I took Evenflo's advice and looked at the feedback on MidwayUSA. Most users liked it, but this guy has a Classic Turret and it didn't work for him:
I purchased this to go with the Lee perfect powder dispenser. I found the instructions to be a bit lacking in clarity. I couldn't figure out how to make it work on my classic turret press. After an email to Lee I was told to return it and purchase the Auto Disk Pro as this wouldn't function on my press. Sure would have been nice to known this upfront.

I think it would be best to consult Lee customer service before you buy it, just to confirm whether it works on your press.

I don't understand how they could tell him the PPM doesn't work with a Turret press when it clearly says it will on their WEB site. All you need to do is add the Universal charging Die like i said above and the PPM mounts right up... That quote I posted above is directly from the PPM page under the UCD listing.

I'm betting the guy who had all the problems might have been "a little thick" and the Lee Customer Service took the easy way out with him... I will make sure that combination will work before i buy anything though... Thanks!
