Lee taper crimp

I will be reloading 45 ACPs for the first time. I own a Lee Classic Turret Press and need a taper crimp die. The Lee taper crimp die literature states "jacketed bullets must have a crimp groove." Several bullets that I would like to use (Speer gold dot, etc) don't have these (as far as I can tell).

This is a "dumb" question, but I'll ask it anyway - is it REALLY necessary to get a bullet with a crimp groove if I use the Lee die? Should I be looking for a different taper crimp die? And if so, would a die from a different manufacturer fit in my Lee press?

I use the Lee Factory Crimp die for my .40 reloads. It's a full length sizing die and also crimps the case neck. In the instructions that came with it, it does not require a bullet with crimp groove. I've been happy with the results.

You don't need another die.
Your seating die does the taper crimp if you adjsut it to do so.

Thats for the FCD collet rifle die.
The FCD for auto pistols doesn't work like the rifle FCD.

Auto pistol bullets almost never have crimp grooves for roll crimp, because they must headspace off the case mouth. If you crimped into the bullet cannulure it would not be able to headspace.

Ditto. And we really don't need to "crimp" .45 ammo anyway, all that's needed is to remove any case flare we put in.

Dies are dies, they all fit any press. (Well, one Dillon press is the only currently made exception.)
