I need some suggestions on a semi-auto for a left handed person. I tried several models of different brands and for the most part I could not work the gun one handed. I could not bend my finger in a way that could work the slide lock. What I am looking for is a smaller 45 or 9 mm for a ccw.

Any ideas would be a big help.

Thanks
Tom

You're not really supposed to hit the slide release one handed anyway. Parts wear out pretty quick that way. One hand pulls the slide, the other presses down on the release.

But the others will chime in with more info.

SA Loaded

i'm a lefty and after a little practice don't have any problems with my SA Loaded.
I can operate the mag release and release the slide stop with my index finger. The only left-handed thing i need is the ambi-safety.

Glock. They do better if you ignore the lever and just yank the slide to close.
H&K 2000 has slide stop and magazine catches on both sides.

I have handled my P226 lefthanded and although that is supposed to be about the most sinister-unfriendly gun going, I had no trouble reaching the magazine catch and decocker with my left forefinger. And just yanked the slide to reload, no need to use the lever for anything but field stripping.

LOOK TO CZ !!

I am also a left-handed shooter. I shoot a CZ 75B in 40 that has an ambi-safety. The slide stop is easily worked with my left hand with still holding the gun firmly. The mag release, which is on the left side of the gun can easily be pushed with my ring finger. Check CZ out, the have alot of other models that are lefty friendly. Great prices too !!!

I shoot my 75B weekly in IDPA competition with no handicaps from being left handed. Although some say being a lefty is a handicap !!!

Left handed

First I do not trail hitting the slide release. I train by pulling back the slide to release it. Handgun for CC, I currently use a glock 23 but it is issued to me. I have carried a Beretta 92F but large but works fine. Colt 1911 with Ambi safety, Kahr PM9, The only guns I have not been able to get to love are the Sigs. I guess they don't fit my hand well.

HK P2000 is an ambi gun. I too wanted a lefthanded gun and decided on the HK P2000. The USP series can be had in a lefthanded variant. As well as the Walther P99.

Glocks and 1911s were pretty lefty friendly for me as well.

I find the Springfield XD series to be very Lefty friendly. Ambi magazine release is nice, safety features involve the grip and the trigger so no button to worry about.

As for the slide release, learn to "slingshot" the slide rather than pushing the release down. If you ever have to release the slide in a panic situation you will find "slingshoting" much easier. Also it is a LOT less wear on the gun.

I recently became left hand dominant,

Due to a long fall, the landing messed up my right arm and hand something fierce.
I can relate to, frustration from the lack of marketing firearms or accesories specifically for left handed shooters. I had my sig p220 mag release swaped around to left handed, and am amazed at how well it is working out for me. If you get a sig I am pretty sure all of them are able to be swapped around by a qualified gunsmith or sig armorer. please do not attempt to do it your self, I have wittnessed a gun store clerk try it and he put the mag release in with the springloaded retention pin rotated 180 degrees the wrong way and wah-lah 650 dollar paperweight. If pin is rotated the wrong way the mag won't latch in the well and the mag release can not be removed without something getting drilled, or ground out.

I also have troubles with the slide releases on most semi autos, not on my glock model-22. I ordered an extended slide release from lonewolfdist, dot, com . Now it is easy to release the slide with a sweep of my LH forefinger.

Scanr, I hope this helps you.

First of all try to carry the attitude that left handers live in a right handed world. You do you know. I am left handed. There are many things you do right handed because of it. My suggestion is to master the art of shootingthe pistol using both hands the right handed way. I did it early on. As a southpaw you are much more versatile than the average right hander anyway.

Glock, in my experience. I shoot a G19 in competition. I slingshot the slide to release it into battery, and use my trigger finger to hit the mag release. I have zero trouble shooting it as a southpaw.

Ditto on the 19 - I have the same experience as a lefty.

hmmm...Im a lefty and never had a problem manipulating a auto.I cant really describe good how I do I just do_Ok let me get one of mine and do it right now...

ok,the slide release, using one hand I just shift the weapon slighty and use my index finger.

the safety,on a 1911 model one handed I move my thumb around the back and flip it.

the mag release,I use my middle finger. One a note the HK USP series have the best and easiest mag release for leftys.Different models are easier or harder depending.

the only models where I use my right hand for mag release are types that have it on the bottom of the grip like Ruger mk1 and P38's.

Now revolvers to empty the cylinder I change the weapon to the right hand.

Scanr;

I made this choice many years ago. Got the H&K USPc in variant 2. Later, I sent it to H&K & had an ambi operating lever installed. Good gun, never a problem either in operation or manual of arms.

I'm supposing that the 2000 is as good or better, but I have no personal experience with one. However, I don't believe you can carry cocked & locked with the 2000 as you can with the USP's if you so desire.

Just get the pistol you want and learn how to run it. I shoot left handed and always grasp the pistol with two hands I actually prefer to operate the slide release with the index finger of my off hand. I drop the mag, isert a fresh one and as I'm bringinf my support had up I pull the slide release down before finalizing my grip. I's smooth and fast although Brian Enos will never have to worry about me being faster than him.

Scanr you might get some better advice if you let us know a little about your shooting experience. What guns have you shot, what did you like about them, what did you not like, how recoil sensative are you, how are you planning on carrying it concealed, ect. This will help us identify guns that might fit your needs.

Here's what I carry as a left-hander. Remember this is just my list of common carry pistols, not all that I shoot.

1. Smith and Wesson 642 snub-nosed .38 Special
2. FM High Power Detective model in 9mm (3" slide and Cylinder and Slide hammer/sear)
3. Kahr K9, also in 9mm

I carry the High Power about 90% of the time, It's an Argentine copy of the FN frame with a 3" slide. I've had to change the hammer/sear to Cylinder and Slide parts to cure a case of hammer bite, and had the magazine safety removed, but it's stock otherwise. The K9 is a good little 9mm pistol, but a little heavy for the capacity. I'd check out the P9 if you are going to consider it. Finally the 642 is my pocket carry option for when I can't dress to accomidate an IWB or shoulder holster.

I'm currently evaluating a Springfield XD45 Compact for carry. Before I do that, I need is a good IWB holster, discrete single magazine carrier, and to run a couple hundred hollowpoints through it. After that I'll be comfortable carrying it.

Finally, I always "slingshot" the slide to return it to battery. This means that I can use the same motion for different pattern pistols, also I feel it gives a little more impluse when chambering the round. Hope this helps.

As a lefty, my requirement is "not hostile to left handers", and there are suprisingly few handguns that I would describe as "hostile".

My assumption in this is that the slide release is irrelevant (The proper technique is wrap your fingers over the top rear), and that mag releases of the left side of the handgun is "deal withable".

Handguns:

Known hostiles:
---------------------

* Walther PPK & variants (ambisafety not possible)
* Plain 1911, w/out ambisafety. (with the ambisafety, it's fine)
* Anything with an unreversible cross bolt safety. (Lots of .22's have that issue)
*Anything with a molded grip overly specific to right hand.
* Desert Eagle .50 (There's a moulding on the grip that will knock the snot out of your knuckle)

Known Friendlies:
-----------------
*Sig (reverse the mag release, and confuse your friends!)
*Glock
*1911 w/ ambi
*H&K
* In fact, just about any combat pistol designed since the mid 80's is OK.

I am a lefty as well and I carry:
  • 1911 with ambi safety and mag release
  • HK USPf 45 variant 2 with safety/decock on the right side with an ambi mag release

Both of these work great for lefties :)
