MILWAUKEE -- Police said a storeowner shot and killed one of two teenagers he said was trying to rob his Milwaukee store.

Singh and his wife, Devinder Singh live above the store at 31st Street and Glendale Avenue.

They said they heard noises around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

Police said the 51-year-old took his gun, went downstairs and shot at the two teenagers, ages 17 and 18.

The 18-year-old later died.

Singh was taken into police custody, but was later released.

Monday, his wife defended his actions.

"In this United States, we have the right to live our life, and we are not criminal. We are working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. My husband he drives a semi. He works more than me. So we have the right, and we have the right to kill if someone comes on my property like that," Devinder Singh said.

Singh is scheduled to meet with the district attorney Thursday to determine whether the shooting was justified.

Edited to add: I guess I should give more info as to why I care. This man is an old friend of mine. He is an immigrant from India and a great person, always a hard worker and never anything but absolutely polite and friendly every time I had the pleasure of coming into contact with him. I am looking for any advice I could give him as far as his future possible legal issues. Thanks for any advice!

And he should never even consider meeting with anyone regarding this incident without legal representation....btdt.

If the perps were inside his store, it sounds like a good shoot.

1. Mr. Singh needs a lawyer yesterday. A GOOD one, well versed in both criminal and civil law. (The perp's next of kin may sue.)

2. Mr. Singh should not talk to ANYONE except his lawyer about this. NO friends. NO family. Especially NO reporters, police or DA. NO exceptions.

3. Mr. Singh should assume his phone is tapped.

I agree that he should get a lawyer... STAT.

A good lawyer would probably stop the charges right now... if his use of force was justified. With a good lawyer, it most likely won't even go to court.

If he goes to the DA representing himself, it may go to trial anyways... then he would HAVE to get a lawyer, and a trial like that would be expensive for sure!

I would get a lawyer to go with me in front of the DA. Make sure he knows that if it goes to trial, there is a good chance he won't be the one representing me/him...

Sounds like a good shoot... just suck it up and eat the grand or two it will run to put a lawyer on retainer and get him to meet the DA with you. Just the fact you have one may tip the scales!

tell his wife to please be quiet

& that the media is their dire enemy.
Get a lawyer and don't talk to anyone but the lawyer.
Did I mention that the wife needs to please not talk to anyone but the lawyer?!
